Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An arc welding apparatus is disclosed in one form including a conductor tube defining an internal passageway and a distal end portion. The internal passageway has an internal profile proximate the distal end portion. The apparatus further includes an alignment device comprising an exterior profile and an internal passage. The exterior profile is configured for mechanical attachment to the internal profile of the conductor tube. The apparatus also includes a conduit liner disposed in the internal passageway of the conductor tube and the internal passage of the alignment device.

What is claimed is: 1. An arc welding apparatus comprising: a conductor tube defining an internal passageway and a distal end portion, the internal passageway having an internal profile proximate the distal end portion; an alignment device comprising an exterior profile and an internal passage, the exterior profile being configured for mechanical attachment to the internal profile of the conductor tube, the internal passage having a tapered profile whereby a diameter of the internal passage at a proximal end portion is larger than a diameter of the internal passage at a distal end portion, and wherein the exterior profile of the alignment device includes a plurality of cam locking parts separated one from another by a gas port extending from the proximal end portion to the distal end portion of the alignment device, wherein the internal profile of the conductor tube includes an engaging portion configured to engage one or more of the plurality of cam locking parts to retain the alignment device within the conductor tube; and a conduit liner disposed in the internal passageway of the conductor tube and the alignment device and terminating proximate the distal end of the conductor tube. 2. The arc welding apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the alignment device comprises a plurality of ports for the passage of a gas through the conductor tube. 3. The arc welding apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the plurality of ports extend from the proximal end portion to the distal end portion of the alignment device. 4. The arc welding apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the plurality of ports are evenly spaced radially about the alignment device. 5. The arc welding apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the internal profile of the conductor tube is configured for accepting the exterior profile of the alignment device, and the conductor tube and the alignment device are press fit together. 6. The arc welding apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the boundaries of the internal passage and exterior profile of the alignment device are concentric. 7. The arc welding apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the alignment device aligns the conductor tube with the longitudinal axis of the conductor tube. 8. The arc welding apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a contact tip having an internal cavity, a proximal end, and a distal end, the proximal end engaging the distal end of the conductor tube and the distal end defining an exit orifice. 9. The arc welding apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the alignment device aligns the conduit liner with the exit orifice of the contact tip along the longitudinal axis of the conductor tube. 10. An arc welding apparatus comprising: a conductor tube defining an internal passageway and a distal end, the internal passageway having an internal profile; and an alignment device having a proximal end, distal end, an exterior profile and an internal passage, the exterior profile being configured for mechanical attachment to the internal profile of the conductor tube and the internal passage configured for alignment of a conduit liner, wherein the internal passage has a tapered profile whereby a diameter of the internal passage at a proximal end portion is larger than a diameter of the internal passage at a distal end portion, wherein the exterior profile of the alignment device includes a plurality of cam locking parts separated one from another by a gas port extending from the proximal end portion to the distal end portion of the alignment device, wherein the internal profile of the conductor tube includes an engaging portion configured to engage one or more of the plurality of cam locking parts to retain the alignment device within the conductor tube. 11. The arc welding apparatus of claim 10 , further comprising a conduit liner disposed in the conductor tube internal passageway passing through the internal passage of the conduit liner and terminating proximate to the distal end of the conductor tube. 12. The arc welding device of claim 10 , wherein the conductor tube internal profile is press fit to the exterior profile of the alignment device. 13. The arc welding device of claim 10 , wherein the conductor tube internal profile defines an annular groove for locking the alignment device. 14. The arc welding device of claim 10 , wherein the conductor tube internal profile defines a plurality of threads for mechanically attaching the alignment device comprising a plurality of threads. 15. The arc welding device of claim 10 , wherein the alignment device has at least one port extending from the proximal end to the distal end. 16. The arc welding device of claim 15 , wherein the at least one port defines at least one passage bordering the internal profile of the conductor tube. 17. The arc welding device of claim 15 , the at least one port being rounded in shape. 18. The arc welding device of claim 15 , the at least one port being polygonal in shape. 19. The arc welding device of claim 15 , wherein the at least one port is aligned with a proximodistal axis of the alignment device. 20. The arc welding device of claim 15 , further comprising a plurality of ports equally spaced radially about the internal passage. 21. An alignment device for use in a welding apparatus comprising an exterior profile being configured for mechanical attachment and an internal passage, wherein the alignment device is disposed within an internal passageway of a conductor tube and aligns a conduit liner with an exit orifice of a contact tip, wherein the internal passage has a tapered profile whereby a diameter of the internal passage at a proximal end portion is larger than a diameter of the internal passage at a distal end portion, and wherein the exterior profile of the alignment device includes a plurality of cam locking parts separated one from another by a gas port extending from the proximal end portion to the distal end portion of the alignment device, wherein the internal profile of the conductor tube includes an engaging portion configured to engage one or more of the plurality of cam locking parts to retain the alignment device within the conductor tube. 22.
