An integrated storage, transportation and disposal system for used fuel assemblies is provided. The system includes a plurality of sealed canisters and a cask sized to receive the sealed canisters in side by side relationship. The plurality of sealed canisters include an internal basket structure to receive a plurality of used fuel assemblies. The internal basket structure includes a plurality of radiation-absorbing panels and a plurality of hemispherical ribs generally perpendicular to the canister sidewall. The sealed canisters are received within the cask for storage and transportation and are removed from the cask for disposal at a designated repository. The system of the present invention allows the handling of sealed canisters separately or collectively, while allowing storage and transportation of high burnup fuel and damaged fuel to the designated repository.

The invention claimed is: 1. An integrated storage, transportation and disposal system for used nuclear fuel assemblies, comprising: a plurality of canisters each including a canister sidewall defining a canister enclosure sized to receive a plurality of fuel basket tubes in side by side relationship, each of the plurality of fuel basket tubes being sized to receive at least one of the used nuclear fuel assemblies therein, each of the plurality of canisters including a plurality of longitudinal reinforcing members within the canister enclosure, the plurality of longitudinal reinforcing members being interposed between the canister sidewall and the plurality of fuel basket tubes, each of the plurality of longitudinal reinforcing members including: a vertical reinforcing member sidewall including a major web and two spaced apart minor webs that define a u-shaped cross-section, and upper and lower horizontal ribs interconnecting the major web and the spaced apart minor webs at longitudinally spaced apart portions of the vertical reinforcing member sidewall and extending perpendicular to the major web and the minor webs of the vertical reinforcing member sidewall to provide torsional rigidity to the longitudinal reinforcing member, wherein the upper and lower horizontal ribs extend radially within the canister enclosure and perpendicular to the canister sidewall and contact the canister sidewall to transfer heat thereto from the plurality of fuel basket tubes; and a cask including an end and a cask sidewall to define an internal cask volume, wherein the plurality of canisters are sized to be received within the internal cask volume in side by side relationship for transportation of the plurality of used fuel assemblies, each of the plurality of canisters being removable from the internal cask volume for disposal of the used fuel assemblies. 2. The system of claim 1 wherein the cask includes a basket assembly defining a plurality of basket cells within the internal cask volume, each of the plurality of basket cells being sized to receive one of the plurality of canisters. 3. The system of claim 2 wherein the basket assembly includes a polygonal tube and a plurality of reinforcing spars extending radially outwardly therefrom. 4. The system of claim 3 wherein the plurality of reinforcing spars are y-shaped and are interposed between adjacent canisters within the internal cask volume. 5. The system of claim 1 wherein each of the plurality of canisters includes a radiation absorbing panel interposed between adjacent fuel basket tubes. 6. An integrated system for storing, transporting and disposing used nuclear fuel, the integrated system comprising: a cask including an internal basket assembly having a plurality of basket cells; a plurality of canisters sized for side-by-side storage within the plurality of basket cells, each of the plurality of canisters including a canister sidewall defining an interior volume, a plurality of radiation-absorbing panels within the interior volume, and a plurality of longitudinal reinforcing members stacked atop each other adjacent the canister sidewall and extending vertically within the interior volume, the plurality of longitudinal reinforcing members including: a vertical reinforcing member sidewall, and upper and lower hemispherical horizontal ribs joined to longitudinally spaced apart portions of the vertical reinforcing member sidewall and extending perpendicular to the vertical reinforcing member sidewall, wherein the hemispherical horizontal ribs extend radially within the interior volume and perpendicular to the canister sidewall and contact the canister sidewall to transfer heat thereto; and a plurality of fuel basket tubes for containing the used nuclear fuel therein, at least two of the plurality of fuel basket tubes being inserted into each of the plurality of canisters between the radiation absorbing panels and the longitudinal reinforcing members, each of the plurality of fuel basket tubes including a wire mesh tray at a lower portion thereof that is spaced apart from the used nuclear fuel contained within the plurality of fuel basket tubes. 7. The integrated system of claim 6 wherein the basket assembly includes a polygonal tube and a plurality of reinforcing spars extending radially outwardly therefrom. 8. The integrated system of claim 6 wherein each of the plurality of canisters include a drain port for the evacuation of water from the canister interior volume. 9. The integrated system of claim 6 wherein the plurality of radiation absorbing panels include a v-shaped cross-section. 10. The integrated system of claim 6 wherein each of the plurality of fuel basket tubes includes an internal chair to support the used nuclear fuel above the mesh wire tray. 11. The integrated system of claim 6 wherein each of the plurality of fuel basket tubes includes a retrieval mechanism. 12. The integrated system of claim 11 wherein the retrieval mechanism includes a recess in a rectangular fuel basket tube sidewall.
