Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An implantable device may be provided. The implantable device may comprise an upper assembly comprising a ramped base and a pair of opposing windows. The pair of opposing windows may extend upward from either lateral side of the ramped base. A gripping assembly may be disposed in each window. The implantable device may further comprise a lower assembly comprising a ramped base and a pair of opposing windows. The pair of opposing windows may extend down from either lateral side of the ramped base. A gripping assembly is disposed in each window. The implantable device may further comprise a ramped actuator assembly disposed between the upper assembly and the lower assembly. The ramped actuator may be configured to transition the implantable device from a collapsed form having a first height to an expanded form having a second height and wherein the second height is greater than the first height.

What is claimed is: 1. A surgical method comprising: inserting an implantable device into an interspinous space, wherein the implantable device is in a collapsed form having a first height; and expanding the implantable device in the interspinous space, wherein the implantable device is expanded to an expanded form having a second height, wherein the implantable device comprises: an upper assembly including a pair of upwardly facing extensions; a lower assembly including a pair of downwardly facing extensions; and an actuation assembly positioned between the upper assembly and the lower assembly for changing a distance of separation between the upper assembly and the lower assembly, wherein the actuation assembly comprises a first ramped actuator, a second ramped actuator and a central screw, wherein rotation of the central screw draws the first ramped actuator toward the second ramped actuator, thereby causing expansion of the implantable device. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first ramped actuator is a front ramped actuator and the second ramped actuator is a rear ramped actuator. 3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the upper assembly comprises a first angled wedge and a second angled wedge, wherein the first angled wedge engages the front ramped actuator and the second angled wedge engages the rear ramped actuator. 4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the first angled wedge and the second angled wedge slope in opposite directions. 5. The method of claim 3 , wherein the first angled wedge comprises a first groove and the second angled wedge comprises a second groove. 6. The method of claim 3 , wherein a first dovetail connection is formed between the first angled wedge and the front ramped actuator and a second dovetail connection is formed between the second angled wedge and the rear ramped actuator. 7. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least one spike extends from the upper assembly into an upper spinous process member and at least one spike extends from the lower assembly into a lower spinous process member. 8. A surgical method comprising: inserting an implantable device into an interspinous space, wherein the implantable device is in a collapsed form having a first height; and expanding the implantable device in the interspinous space, wherein the implantable device is expanded to an expanded form having a second height, wherein the implantable device comprises: an upper assembly including a pair of upwardly facing extensions; a lower assembly including a pair of downwardly facing extensions; an actuation assembly positioned between the upper assembly and the lower assembly for changing a distance of separation between the upper assembly and the lower assembly, wherein the actuation assembly comprises a first ramped actuator, a second ramped actuator and a central screw, wherein rotation of the central screw draws the first ramped actuator toward the second ramped actuator, thereby causing expansion of the implantable device; a first spike plate assembly inserted through at least one of the upwardly facing extensions; and a second spike plate assembly inserted through at least one of the downwardly facing extensions. 9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the upper assembly comprises a first angled wedge and the lower assembly comprises a second angled wedge. 10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the first angled wedge comprises a first groove and the second angled wedge comprises a second groove. 11. The method of claim 10 , wherein each of the first angled wedge and the second angled wedge are configured to engage the first ramped actuator. 12. The method of claim 11 , wherein each of the first angled wedge and the second angled wedge form a dovetail connection with the first ramped actuator. 13. The method of claim 8 , wherein the upper assembly comprises a first window for receiving the first plate assembly therethrough and the lower assembly comprises a second window for receiving the second plate assembly therethrough. 14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the first window further receives a first telescoping subassembly therethrough and the second window further receives a second telescoping subassembly therethrough. 15. The method of claim 8 , wherein the first spike plate assembly is inserted through a first window in at least one of the upwardly facing extensions and the second spike plate assembly is inserted through a second window in at least one of the downwardly facing extensions.
