Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A deformable controller for an electronic device, such as a portable electronic device, is disclosed. A user can interact with the controller to cause it to “deform” and thereby provide user input to control the electronic device. The controller can be malleable and symmetrical, and user interaction with the controller can be provided with substantially arbitrary orientation. In one embodiment, the controller is an in-line controller with a cable that couples to the electronic device. In one particular implementation, the portable electronic device can be a portable media player and the controller can remotely control media playback functions for the portable media player.

What is claimed is: 1. A deformable controller for a portable electronic device, the deformable controller comprising: a deformable outer shell configured to compress in response to any one of an external rolling force, a squeezing force, or an external twisting force being applied to at least a portion of an outer surface of the deformable outer shell in a direction about a longitudinal axis of the deformable outer shell; an array of electrical contacts coupled to at least a portion of an inner surface of the deformable outer shell and operative to generate an electrical signal in response to one of the array of electrical contacts physically contacting another one of the array of electrical contacts due to a compression of the deformable outer shell by a user; and wherein the compression of the deformable outer shell causes at least one function of a plurality of predetermined functions to be requested. 2. A deformable controller as recited in claim 1 , wherein the deformable controller further comprises: a microphone that is coupled to the deformable outer shell. 3. A deformable controller as recited in claim 1 , wherein the deformable controller further comprises: an array of electrical contacts disposed within the deformable outer shell; and an array of electrically resistive elements, wherein each resistive element of the array of resistive elements is electrically connected to at least one electrical contact of the array of electrical contacts. 4. A deformable controller as recited in claim 1 , wherein the deformable controller further comprises: at least one tactile feedback element disposed within the deformable outer shell. 5. A deformable controller as recited in claim 1 , wherein the deformable outer shell is configured to change shape due to the compression of the deformable outer shell by a user. 6. A method for commanding a portable electronic device, the method comprising: receiving a user manipulation with at least a portion of a deformable controller; determining, with the deformable controller, a type of manipulation of the received user manipulation, the manipulation including: manipulating an array of electrical contacts coupled to at least a portion of an inner surface of the deformable controller such that a subset of the array of electrical contacts comes in contact with a central electrical contact to form an electrical connection operative to generate an electrical signal, wherein the central electrical contact is surrounded b the array of electrical contacts within the deformable controller; and in response to a determination that the type of manipulation comprises a first type of manipulation of a group of manipulations, transmitting from the deformable controller to the portable electronic device a first output signal to control a first operation of the portable electronic device; and in response to a determination that the type of manipulation comprises a second type of manipulation of the group of manipulations, transmitting from the deformable controller to the portable electronic device a second output signal to control a second operation of the portable electronic device, wherein at least one of the first type of manipulation or the second type of manipulation is a compression of the deformable controller by a user. 7. A method as recited in claim 6 , wherein the first and second output signals comprise at least one of a direction and a magnitude of the received user manipulation. 8. A method as recited in claim 6 , wherein the deformable controller is disposed around and in-line with a cable coupled to the portable electronic device, and wherein the cable extends from the portable electronic device to a headset. 9. A method as recited in claim 6 , wherein the group of manipulations comprises at least one of a rolling action, a squeezing action, a pinching action, a pressing action, and a twisting action. 10. A method as recited in claim 6 , wherein at least one of the first and the second operations is associated with media playback. 11. A method as recited in claim 6 , wherein at least one of the first and the second operations is configured to control a volume level of audio playback of the portable electronic device. 12. A method as recited in claim 11 , wherein: the first operation is configured to control a rate of a fast forward operation on media being played by the portable electronic device; and the second operation is configured to control a reverse operation on the media. 13. A portable media system, comprising: a portable media player configured to play back at least one media item; and a controller comprising an array of flexible electrical contacts residing within the controller and coupled to at least a portion of an inner surface of a deformable outer shell, wherein at least a first electrical contact of the array of flexible electrical contacts is configured to change shape, in response to a user interaction with at least a portion of the controller, to physically couple the first electrical contact with at least a second electrical contact of the array of flexible electrical contacts, and wherein physical coupling of the first electrical contact and the second electrical contact produces an electrical signal. 14. A portable media system as recited in claim 13 , wherein the user interaction comprises any one of a pressing action on the at least a portion of the controller, a rolling action on the at least a portion of the controller, and a twisting action of the at least a portion of the controller. 15. A portable media system as recited in claim 13 , wherein the array of flexible electrical contacts is at least partially coupled to at least a portion of an inner surface of the controller. 16. A portable media system as recited in claim 13 , wherein the portable media system further comprises a cable comprising at least one ear piece at a first end of the cable and an audio connector at a second end of the cable, and wherein the controller is positioned along the cable. 17. A portable media system as recited in claim 13 , wherein the controller is configured to signal the portable media player to invoke at least one media playback command of a plurality of media playback commands, in response to the interaction between the first electrical contact and the second electrical contact. 18. A portable media system as recited in claim 13 , wherein the first electrical contact and the second electrical contract are aligned longitudinally with a portion of a length of the controller. 19. A portable media system as recited in claim 13 , wherein at least two of the plurality of electrical contacts are connected to and extend longitudinally with an inner sidewall of the controller. 20. A portable media system as recited in claim 13 , wherein the first electrical contact is connected to a sidewall of the controller and the second electrical contact is positioned substantially at a center of the controller. 21. A deformable controller for a portable electronic device, the controller comprising: a deformable outer shell; and an array of outer electrical contacts coupled to an inner surface of the deformable outer shell, at least one of the array of outer electrical contacts contacting at least another one of the array of outer electrical contacts or a central electrical contact during a user manipulation of the deformable outer shell, the array of outer contacts defining a perimeter that encompasses the central electrical contact, wherein
