Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Some embodiments of the invention provides a media editing application that includes tools to perform a variety of different editing operations based on roles assigned to media content. In some embodiments, the media editing application includes focus-editing tools to emphasize or de-emphasize different sets of clips based on the assigned roles. In some embodiments, the media editing application allows one or more sets of clips to be disabled or enabled during playback based on the assigned roles.

First claim

What is claims is: 1. A non-transitory machine readable medium storing a media-editing application having a user interface (UI), the media-editing application for execution by at least one processing unit, the UI comprising: a timeline for displaying a representation of a composite presentation comprising a plurality of media clips, each media clip assigned a set of one or more roles from a plurality of different roles; and a timeline focus tool for displaying selectable items representing the plurality of different roles, wherein a selection of a particular selectable item representing a particular role changes an appearance of each media clip that is assigned the particular role from a first appearance to a second different appearance in the timeline. 2. The non-transitory machine readable medium of claim 1 , wherein the timeline displays the representation of the composite presentation by displaying a representation of each media clip, wherein the selection of the particular selectable item changes the appearance of each media clip by minimizing or highlighting the representation of the media clip in the timeline. 3. The non-transitory machine readable medium of claim 1 , wherein the selection of the particular selectable item further causes each media clip assigned the particular role to be disabled during a playback of the composite presentation. 4. The non-transitory machine readable medium of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of media clips comprises at least one audio clip, wherein each audio clip is assigned one of a plurality of different audio roles. 5. The non-transitory machine readable medium of claim 4 , wherein the plurality of different audio roles comprises at least one of a dialogue role, a music role, and an effect role. 6. The non-transitory machine readable medium of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of media clips comprises at least one video clip, wherein each video clip is assigned one of a plurality of different video roles. 7. The non-transitory machine readable medium of claim 6 , wherein the plurality of different video roles comprises at least one of a title role and a video role. 8. The non-transitory machine readable medium of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of different roles comprises at least a first role that is a sub-role of a second role, wherein a selection of a first selectable item representing the first role changes the appearance of each media clip in the timeline assigned the first role, wherein a selection of a second selectable item representing the second role changes the appearance of each media clip in the timeline assigned the first role or the second role. 9. The non-transitory machine readable medium of claim 1 , wherein the timeline is further for displaying a compound clip defined by multiple media clips, wherein a selection of the particular selectable item representing the particular role changes an appearance of the compound clip when at least one of the multiple media clips in the compound clip is assigned the particular role. 10. The non-transitory machine readable medium of claim 1 , wherein the UI further comprises a timeline search tool for searching for media clips in the composite presentation based on names of the media clips or keywords associated with one or more of the media clips. 11. The non-transitory machine readable medium of claim 10 , wherein the timeline focus tool is provided as part of the timeline search tool. 12. For a media-editing application, a method of editing a composite presentation, the method comprising: displaying, in a timeline, a representation of the composite presentation comprising a plurality of media clips, each media clip assigned a set of one or more roles from a plurality of different roles; displaying selectable items representing the plurality of different roles; receiving a selection of a particular selectable item representing a particular role; and changing, in response to the selection, an appearance of each media clip that is assigned the particular role from a first appearance to a second different appearance in the timeline. 13. The method of claim 12 , wherein displaying the representation of the composite presentation comprises displaying a representation of each media clip, wherein changing the appearance of each media clip comprises minimizing or highlighting the representation of the media clip in the timeline. 14. The method of claim 12 further comprising disabling, in response to the selection, each media clip assigned the particular role. 15. The method of claim 14 further comprising: receiving an input to play a preview of the composite presentation; and playing the preview by playing back only each media clip in the composite presentation that is not disabled. 16. A method of defining a media-editing application comprising a user interface (UI), the method comprising: defining a timeline for displaying a representation of a composite presentation comprising a plurality of media clips, each media clip assigned a set of one or more roles from a plurality of different roles; and defining a timeline focus tool for displaying selectable items representing the plurality of different roles, wherein a selection of a particular selectable item representing a particular role changes an appearance of each media clip that is assigned the particular role from a first appearance to a second different appearance in the timeline. 17. The method of claim 16 , wherein the timeline displays the representation of the composite presentation by displaying a representation of each media clip, wherein the selection of the particular selectable item changes the appearance of each media clip by minimizing or highlighting the representation of the media clip in the timeline. 18. The method of claim 16 , wherein the selection of the particular selectable item further causes each media clip that is assigned the particular role to be disabled during a playback of the composite presentation.
