The present teachings provide apparatuses and methods for automated handling of samples, e.g., biological or chemical samples. The apparatuses and the methods of the present teachings allow automated performance of various sample manipulation steps without manual intervention. In a preferred embodiment, the present teachings provide apparatuses and methods for automated enrichment of templated beads produced by PCR.

What is claimed is: 1. An apparatus comprising: a platform including a horizontal surface and a channel extending in the horizontal surface to receive an array of compartments; the array of compartments disposed in the channel, the array including one row of compartments disposed in a plurality of columns, the one row, the array including first and last compartments at opposite ends of the each row and further compartments located between the first and last compartments of the row; a magnet disposed in the channel of the platform; a translation device including a mounting; a pipette tip attached to the mounting of the translation device; and the apparatus programmed to facilitate relative movement of the array and the magnet within the channel to apply and remove a magnetic field from the first compartment of the row of the array and further programmed to control the translation device to position the pipette tip in compartments of the row of the array; wherein, when the magnetic field is applied to the first compartment, the magnet is not positioned adjacent to a compartment of the further compartments located between the first and last compartments of the respective one or more rows. 2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the magnet is movable relative to the platform, the apparatus programmed to facilitate movement of the magnet to apply a magnetic field to or remove the magnetic field from the first compartment of the row of the array. 3. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the apparatus is programmed to control the translation device to move the magnet. 4. The apparatus of claim 3 , wherein the translation device includes a rod, and the apparatus includes a movable sled disposed in the channel that is configured to receive the rod, the magnet is disposed within the movable sled. 5. The apparatus of claim 3 , further comprising a movable sled disposed in the channel and having a rod, wherein the magnet is disposed within the movable sled, the apparatus programmed to control the translation device to engage the rod to move the sled. 6. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the magnet is stationary and the array of compartments is movable along the channel relative to the platform, the apparatus programmed to control the translation device to move the first compartment of the row into a magnetic field of the magnet, the magnetic field sufficient to retain a magnetic solid fraction of a sample. 7. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the apparatus is programmed to control the translation device to move the array of compartments using the pipette tip. 8. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the array of compartments is a strip of tubes. 9. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a second magnet disposed in a horizontal surface of the platform and proximal to the last compartment of the row of the array of compartments. 10. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a pump in fluid communication with the pipette tip to facilitate aspiration and deposition of fluids.
