What is claimed is: 1. A device, comprising: a sensor module having a plurality of sensors configured to produce sensor data based on measurements by one or more of the plurality of sensors; and a wireless node connected to the sensor module via a wired communication interface that enables a receipt of the sensor data produced by the sensor module, the wireless node having a wireless transceiver configured to receive one or more remote configuration commands from a gateway device at a monitored location via wireless communication, the one or more remote configuration commands generated in response to a user request for sensor services and used by the device to produce a customized sensor configuration where a first sensor channel of data associated with a first of the plurality of sensors is activated and a second sensor channel of data associated with a second of the plurality of sensors is deactivated, the wireless transceiver further configured to transmit sensor information for all activated sensor channels of data to the gateway device for delivery to a host system remote from the monitored location. 2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the wired communication interface includes a first connection for clock signaling and a second connection for data signaling. 3. The device of claim 1 , wherein the monitored location is a building. 4. The device of claim 1 , wherein the monitored location is a movable area of control. 5. The device of claim 1 , wherein the wireless communication is based on the IEEE 802.15.4 protocol. 6. The device of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of sensors includes a temperature sensor, a humidity sensor and a light sensor. 7. The device of claim 1 , wherein the sensor module is enclosed in a first housing and the wireless node is enclosed in a second housing. 8. The device of claim 1 , wherein the second of the plurality of sensors is prevented from taking measurements. 9. The device of claim 1 , wherein a controller in the wireless node is prevented from receiving sensor data derived from measurements by the second of the plurality of sensors. 10. The device of claim 1 , wherein a controller in the wireless node is prevented from initiating a transmission of sensor data derived from measurements by the second of the plurality of sensors to the gateway device. 11. A method performed by a device at a monitored location, comprising: receiving, by a wireless transceiver in a wireless node of the device, one or more remote configuration commands from a gateway device at a monitored location, the one or more remote configuration commands generated by a host system remote from the monitored location in response to a user request for sensor services; configuring, based on the received one or more remote configuration commands, a customized sensor configuration of the device where a first sensor channel of data associated with a first of a plurality of sensors is activated and a second sensor channel of data associated with a second of the plurality of sensors is deactivated, wherein the plurality of sensors are included in a sensor module that is connected to the wireless node via a wired communication interface, the wired communication interface enabling the wireless node to receive from the sensor module sensor data generated using measurements by one or more of the plurality of sensors; and transmitting, by the wireless transceiver, sensor data for all sensor channels of data that are activated to the gateway device via wireless communication for delivery to the host system. 12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the wired communication interface includes a first connection for clock signaling and a second connection for data signaling. 13. The method of claim 11 , wherein the monitored location is a building. 14. The method of claim 11 , wherein the monitored location is a movable area of control. 15. The method of claim 11 , wherein the wireless communication is based on the IEEE 802.15.4 protocol. 16. The method of claim 11 , wherein the plurality of sensors includes a temperature sensor, a humidity sensor and a light sensor. 17. The method of claim 11 , wherein the sensor module is enclosed in a first housing and the wireless node is enclosed in a second housing. 18. The method of claim 11 , further comprising preventing the second of the plurality of sensors from taking measurements. 19. The method of claim 11 , further comprising preventing a controller in the wireless node from receiving sensor data derived from measurements by the second of the plurality of sensors. 20. The method of claim 11 , further comprising preventing a controller in the wireless node from initiating a transmission of sensor data derived from measurements by the second of the plurality of sensors to the gateway device.
