Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Provided is a novel rod reducing device including a screw jack mechanism that is moveably engaged with an elongated grasping fork assembly, the screw jack mechanism having an elongated threaded portion, the elongated threaded portion being connected at its most distal end to a rod contact member, which is positioned in sliding circumferential contact with each of the two opposing elongated grasping members and the most proximal end of the elongated threaded portion terminating in a controlling member, which can be activated in a measured and controlled manner. A method of using the device is also provided.

What is claimed is: 1. A rod reducing device comprising: a rotatable member defining a longitudinal axis; a rod contact member operatively coupled with the rotatable member; and a grasping fork assembly including a body and first and second elongated grasping members operably coupled to the body, each of the first and second elongated grasping members having a screw grasping element, the rotatable member rotatably coupled directly with the body of the grasping fork assembly such that rotation of the rotatable member causes the rod contact member to move relative to the body, movement of the rod contact member causing the first and second elongated grasping members to move between a spaced apart position configured to receive a screw therebetween and an engaged position configured to secure the screw therebetween, the first and second elongated grasping members being non-parallel in the spaced apart position, wherein the rotatable member is selectively rotatable to control an angular orientation of the first and second elongated grasping members with respect to the longitudinal axis of the rotatable member. 2. The rod reducing device according to claim 1 , wherein the rod contact member is distal of the body of the grasping fork assembly. 3. The rod reducing device according to claim 1 , wherein the first and second elongated grasping members are parallel to each other when the first and second elongated grasping members are in the engaged position. 4. The rod reducing device according to claim 1 , wherein each of the first and second elongated grasping members defines an acute angle with respect to the longitudinal axis of the rotatable member when the first and second elongated grasping members are in the spaced apart position. 5. The rod reducing device according to claim 1 , wherein the first and second elongated grasping members are non-parallel to each other when the first and second elongated grasping members are in the spaced apart position. 6. The rod reducing device according to claim 1 , wherein at least one of the first and second elongated grasping members defines an acute angle with the longitudinal axis of the rotatable member when the first and second elongated grasping members are in the spaced apart position. 7. A rod reducing device comprising: a rotatable member defining a longitudinal axis; a rod contact member operatively coupled with the rotatable member; and a grasping fork assembly including a body and first and second elongated grasping members operably coupled to the body, each of the first and second elongated grasping members having a screw grasping element, the rotatable member rotatably coupled with the body of the grasping fork assembly such that rotation of the rotatable member about a longitudinal axis defined by the rod reducing device causes the rod contact member to move relative to the body from a first position in which the first and second elongated grasping members are permitted to assume a spaced apart position configured to receive a screw between the first and second elongated grasping members and a second position with the first and second elongated grasping members engaging the screw and prevented from returning to the spaced apart position to secure the screw between the first and second elongated grasping members, wherein the first and second elongated grasping members are non-parallel in the spaced apart position. 8. The rod reducing device of claim 7 , wherein the rotatable member is selectively rotatable to control an angular orientation of the first and second elongated grasping members with respect to the longitudinal axis of the rotatable member. 9. The rod reducing device according to claim 7 , wherein the rod contact member is distal of the body of the grasping fork assembly. 10. The rod reducing device according to claim 7 , wherein the first and second elongated grasping members are parallel to each other when the first and second elongated grasping members are in the second position. 11. The rod reducing device according to claim 7 , wherein each of the first and second elongated grasping members defines an acute angle with respect to the longitudinal axis of the rotatable member when the first and second elongated grasping members are in the spaced apart position. 12. A rod reduction device comprising: a housing defining a longitudinal axis and having a first arm and a second arm that extend distally from the housing, a distal end of the first arm and a distal end of the second arm being movable to releasably attach to a bone anchor; an anvil operatively associated with the first arm and the second arm of the housing, the anvil being movable along the longitudinal axis to insert a spinal rod into the bone anchor, the anvil including an anvil body that surrounds a portion of the first arm and a portion of the second arm within the anvil body, the anvil body defining at least one opening dimensioned to receive at least one of the first and second arms; and an actuator coupled with the housing and the anvil such that rotation of the actuator about the longitudinal axis of the housing in a first direction translates the anvil distally, the actuator and the housing being threadably coupled together, wherein a proximal portion of the housing is stationary with respect to the longitudinal axis of the housing during engagement and disengagement of the first and second arms with the bone anchor. 13. The rod reduction device of claim 12 , wherein the at least one opening of the anvil body includes a first opening and a second opening, the first opening dimensioned to receive and encircle the first arm, the second opening dimensioned to receive and encircle the second arm. 14. The rod reduction device of claim 12 , wherein the first arm and the second arm are movable relative to each other between a non-parallel orientation and a parallel orientation as the anvil moves along the first arm and the second arm. 15. A rod reduction device comprising: a housing defining a longitudinal axis; a first arm and a second arm that extend distally from the housing, each of the first arm and the second arm including a proximal end and a distal end, the proximal ends of the first arm and the second arm being secured to the housing such that the distal ends of the first arm and the second arm are releasably attachable to a bone anchor; an anvil supported on the first arm and the second arm, the anvil translatable relative to the housing along the first arm and the second arm to facilitate insertion of a spinal rod into the bone anchor, the anvil defining a first bore and a second bore that receive the first arm and the second arm so that the first bore encircles a surface of the first arm and the second bore encircles a surface of the second arm; and a reduction screw operably coupled with the housing and the anvil such that movement of the reduction screw along the longitudinal axis results in corresponding movement of the anvil along the longitudinal axis to transition the first and second arms between a spaced apart position in which the first and second arms define a gap varying along lengths of the first and second arms, and an engaged position in which the gap is uniform. 16. A rod reducing device comprising: a housing defining a longitudinal axis, the housing including first and second grasping members configured to grasp a portion of a bone anchor therebetween, the first and second grasping members defining a plane; a rotatable member extending through the housing along the longitudinal axis; and a rod contact member positioned at a distal end of the rotat
