Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

In a transmitter or transceiver, codewords from HARQ processes can be mapped or assigned to various layers for transmission and/or retransmission of information on a radio channel. Exemplary embodiments provide for various mappings which facilitate, for example, HARQ processes. For example, a codeword can be mapped onto a plurality of layers which are equal in number to a channel rank of a radio channel to be used for the transmission.

The invention claimed is: 1. A method for transmitting an information signal on a radio channel using at least two hybrid automatic retransmission request, HARQ, codewords, comprising: mapping said HARQ codewords, one for each HARQ process available for simultaneous transmission, onto a first number of layers to generate said information signal having a first transmission rank equal to the first number of layers, wherein at least one of said HARQ codewords is mapped to at least two layers and comprises a block of information bits; initially transmitting said information signal on said radio channel; and retransmitting said block of information bits comprised in said one of the HARQ codewords, with a second transmission rank on said radio channel, wherein the second transmission rank is at least two and less than the first transmission rank, using one of said HARQ processes, the retransmitting comprising: generating one retransmission codeword based on said block of information bits; mapping said retransmission codeword to a second number of layers; and transmitting said retransmission codeword at said second transmission rank equal to the second number of layers, wherein the second number of layers is the same number of layers to which said one of the HARQ codewords was mapped to in the initial transmission, and wherein the layers are symbol streams which are input in parallel to a precoder. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein said second transmission rank is equal to two. 3. The method of claim 2 , wherein said first transmission rank is three or four. 4. The method of claim 1 , wherein there are two HARQ processes available for said simultaneous transmission. 5. The method of claim 1 , wherein said second transmission rank during said retransmission is determined based on a channel rank of said radio channel. 6. The method of claim 1 , wherein each of said HARQ codewords comprise a plurality of channel encoded bits originating from a block of information bits. 7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: distributing symbols associated with said information signal across a plurality of transmit antennas for transmission. 8. The method of claim 7 , wherein said number of transmit antennas is four. 9. A transmitter for transmitting an information signal on a radio channel using at least two hybrid automatic retransmission request, HARQ, codewords, comprising: a plurality of transmit antennas; a processor for generating said HARQ codewords, one for each HARQ process available for simultaneous transmission, wherein said processor is adapted to map said HARQ codewords onto a first number of layers to generate said information signal having a first transmission rank equal to the first number of layers, said processor being further adapted to map at least one of said HARQ codewords to at least two layers, said one of the HARQ codewords comprising a block of information bits; a transmit chain of elements for initially transmitting said information signal, further wherein said processor is adapted to subsequently generate one retransmission codeword based on the block of information bits; said processor being further adapted to map said retransmission codeword onto a second number of layers to generate a retransmission signal having a second transmission rank equal to the second number of layers, wherein said second transmission rank is at least two and is less than said first transmission rank, wherein the second number of layers is the same number of layers to which said one of the HARQ codewords was mapped to in the initial transmission; and said transmit chain of elements being adapted to transmit said retransmission signal on said radio channel, wherein the layers are symbol streams which are input in parallel to a precoder. 10. The transmitter of claim 9 , wherein said second transmission rank is equal to two, and said first transmission rank is three or four. 11. The transmitter of claim 9 , wherein there are two HARQ processes available for said simultaneous transmission. 12. The transmitter of claim 9 , wherein said processor is further adapted to determine said second transmission rank based on a channel rank of said radio channel. 13. The transmitter of claim 9 , wherein said symbols associated with said information signal are distributed across said plurality of transmit antennas for transmission. 14. The transmitter of claim 13 , wherein said number of transmit antennas is four. 15. A method for receiving an information signal which was transmitted using at least two hybrid automatic retransmission request, HARQ, codewords, comprising: receiving said information signal; determining a first mapping between said HARQ codewords and a first number of layers used to generate said information signal having a first transmission rank equal to the first number of layers, wherein at least one of said HARQ codewords is mapped to at least two layers and comprises a block of information bits; decoding said information signal using knowledge of said first mapping; receiving a second information signal which was transmitted using a retransmission codeword, based on the block of information bits, said second information signal having a second transmission rank that is at least two and is less than the first transmission rank; determining a second mapping between said retransmission codeword and a second number of layers equal to the second transmission rank, wherein the second number of layers is the same number of layers to which said one of the HARQ codewords was mapped to in said information signal; and decoding at least part of said second information signal using knowledge of said second mapping, wherein the layers are symbol streams which are input in parallel to a precoder. 16. A receiver for receiving an information signal on a radio channel which was transmitted using at least two hybrid automatic retransmission request, HARQ, codewords, comprising: at least one receive antenna for receiving said information signal; a receive chain of elements connected to said at least one receive antenna for processing said information signal; and comprising: a processor for determining a first mapping between said HARQ codewords and a first number of layers used to generate said information signal having a first transmission rank equal to the first number of layers, wherein at least one of said HARQ codewords is mapped to at least two layers and comprises a block of information bits, said processor being further adapted to decode said information signal using knowledge of said first mapping, wherein: said at least one receive antenna is adapted to receive a second information signal which was transmitted using a retransmission codeword, based on the block of information bits, said second information signal having a second transmission rank that is at least two and is less than the first transmission rank; and said processor is further adapted to determine a second mapping between said retransmission codeword and a second number of layers equal to the second transmission rank, wherein the second number of layers is the same number of layers to which said one of the HARQ codewords was mapped in said information signal; and said processor is further adapted to decode at least part of said second information signal using knowledge of said second mapping, wherein the layers are symbol streams which are input in parallel to a precoder.
