Methods and apparatuses consistent with the present invention provide for improved cleaning while minimizing mechanical damage to clothes in automatic washer cycles using time-varying wash chamber oscillations. An automatic washer has a wash chamber with a central axis and is rotatable about the central axis. Items are loaded into the wash chamber. Wash liquid is supplied into the wash chamber. The wash chamber is oscillated about the central axis by time-varying oscillations.

The embodiments of the invention in which an exclusive property or privilege is claimed are defined as follows: 1. A method of washing items in an automatic washer having a wash chamber rotatable about a central axis, the method comprising the steps of: receiving items into the wash chamber; supplying wash liquid into the wash chamber; oscillating the wash chamber about the central axis during a wash cycle for at least twenty periods, each period having one clockwise rotation movement, and one counter-clockwise movement, and each period occupying a certain time duration in the range of about 0.5 seconds to about 8 seconds; receiving, by a controller of the automatic washer, an input related to the items received into the wash chamber; determining, by the controller, at least one of a first time duration or a second time duration for each period based on the configuration information wherein each of the first time duration and second time duration is at least one of a random time duration or a predetermined time duration; and, switching the time duration of the rotation movements for the periods multiple times during the wash cycle, including from the first time duration, to the second, different, time duration, back to the first time duration and back again to the second time duration, based on the input related to the items received into the wash chamber, during substantially the entire wash cycle. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the time duration of the rotation movements is selected for each period. 3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the wash chamber oscillates for a plurality of periods, each period having at least one clockwise and at least one counter-clockwise oscillation, said time-varying oscillations varying each sequential period. 4. The method of claim 2 , wherein the wash chamber oscillates for a plurality of periods, each period having at least one clockwise and at least one counter-clockwise oscillation, said time-varying oscillations varying bi-modally after a plurality of sequential periods. 5. The method of claim 2 , further comprising the steps of: adjusting an average mean time of the time-varying rotation movements responsive to the detected and/or preselected type of items. 6. The method of claim 2 , further comprising the steps of: adjusting an average mean time of the time-varying oscillations responsive to a detected and/or preselected amount of items. 7. The method of claim 2 , wherein the oscillations are symmetric. 8. The method of claim 1 , wherein each oscillation of the wash chamber is followed by a pause, said pauses varying each sequential period. 9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the input related to the items received into the wash chamber is provided to the controller by at least one of a keypad, user input device, detector, sensor, or combination thereof. 10. A method of washing items in an automatic washer having a wash chamber rotatable about a central axis, the method comprising the steps of: receiving items into the wash chamber; supplying wash liquid into the wash chamber; and oscillating the wash chamber about the central axis during a wash cycle for a plurality of periods, each period having one clockwise rotation movement, and one counter-clockwise movement, receiving, by a controller of the automatic washer, an input related to the items received into the wash chamber; determining, by the controller, a time duration for each period based on the configuration information wherein the time duration for each period is at least one of a random time duration or a predetermined time duration; switching from one time duration to a next time duration at a plurality of time instances, throughout the wash cycle. 11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the input related to the items received into the wash chamber is provided to the controller by at least one of a keypad, user input device, detector, sensor, or combination thereof.
