A blade coupling mechanism for a hand-held surgical cutting instrument includes a first coupling member including a first blade-contacting surface and a first outer perimeter sidewall adjacent the first blade contacting surface. It also includes a second coupling member including a second blade-contacting surface facing the first blade-contacting surface of the first coupling member. The second coupling member includes a second outer perimeter sidewall adjacent the second blade contacting surface. The second blade-contacting surface and the second outer perimeter sidewall meet to define an outer edge. The second coupling member including a bore through the second blade contacting surface. The bore and the second blade contacting surface meeting to define an inner edge. Blade-engaging protrusions project from at least one of the first and second blade-contacting surfaces. The protrusions are spaced closer to the outer edge than the inner edge.

What is claimed is: 1. A surgical cutting instrument for cutting bone with a cutting blade, comprising: a body of the cutting instrument; and a blade coupling mechanism extending from the body and configured to attach the cutting blade, the blade coupling mechanism including, a first coupling member having a first blade-contacting surface, a second coupling member having a second blade-contacting surface facing the first blade-contacting surface of the first coupling member, the second coupling member defining a bore through the second blade contacting surface, blade-engaging protrusions projecting from at least one of the first and second blade-contacting surfaces, and a driving shaft having a shank defining an axis, the first coupling member being disposed on an end of the shank, the shank configured to be slidably received within the bore of the second coupling member, wherein the shank includes a blade receiving recess formed in the shank and configured to receive a portion of the cutting blade. 2. The surgical cutting instrument of claim 1 , wherein the first coupling member and the second coupling member each have an outer perimeter to define an outer edge and the bore and the second plate contacting surface meet to define an inner edge, wherein the protrusions are spaced closer to the outer edge than the inner edge. 3. The surgical cutting instrument of claim 2 , wherein the protrusions include an inner side portion closest to the inner edge and an outer side portion closest to the outer edge, the inner side portion being spaced from the inner edge at least about 60% of the distance from the inner edge to the outer edge. 4. The surgical cutting instrument of claim 1 , wherein the other of the at least one of the first and second blade contacting surfaces comprises at least one receiving recess formed therein, the receiving recess being aligned with and sized to receive the blade engaging protrusions. 5. The surgical cutting instrument of claim 4 , wherein the receiving recess is a groove substantially concentric with the respective outer edge and positioned closer to the outer edge than the inner edge. 6. The surgical cutting instrument of claim 1 , further comprising a sleeve extending from the second coupling member having a tubular shank configured to slidably receive the shank of the driving shaft. 7. The surgical cutting instrument of claim 6 , wherein the shank of the driving shaft defines an axially extending elongated slot passing through the shank and the tubular shank of the sleeve defines a transverse through hole sized to receive a pin, wherein the tubular shank is slidably secured to the shank of the driving shaft by a coupling pin extending through the through hole and elongated slot. 8. The surgical cutting instrument of claim 2 , wherein the outer perimeters are substantially cylindrical and the blade-engaging protrusions are symmetrically disposed about the at least one of the first and second blade-contacting surfaces. 9. The surgical cutting instrument of claim 1 , wherein the blade receiving recess is formed around the shank and sized to slidably receive and retain a head portion of the cutting blade. 10. A surgical cutting instrument for cutting bone with a cutting blade, comprising: a body extending along a longitudinal axis; a motor within the body; and a collet assembly extending from the body and configured to secure the cutting blade substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis, the collet assembly including, a driving shaft having a first head and a first shank, the first head having a first blade contacting surface, a sleeve having a second head and a second shank and defining a bore passing therethrough, the second head having a second blade contacting surface, blade engaging protrusions projecting from at least one of the first and second blade contacting surfaces, wherein the first shank is configured to be slidably received in the bore to capture the cutting blade between the first and second blade contacting surfaces. 11. The surgical cutting instrument of claim 10 , wherein the first head and the second head each have an outer perimeter to define an outer edge and the bore and the second blade contacting surface meet to define an inner edge, wherein the protrusions are spaced closer to the outer edge than the inner edge. 12. The surgical cutting instrument of claim 10 , wherein the other of the at least one of the first and second blade contacting surfaces includes at least one receiving recess formed therein, the receiving recess being aligned with and sized to receive the blade engaging protrusions, wherein the receiving recess is a groove substantially concentric with the longitudinal axis. 13. The surgical cutting instrument of claim 10 , wherein the first shank defines a blade receiving recess formed in the first shank and configured to receive a portion of the cutting blade. 14. The surgical cutting instrument of claim 13 , wherein the blade receiving recess is formed around the first shank and sized to slidably receive and retain a head portion of the cutting blade. 15. The surgical cutting instrument of claim 10 , wherein the first shank of the driving shaft defines an axially extending elongated slot passing through the shank and the second shank of the sleeve defines a transverse through hole sized to receive a pin, wherein the second shank is slidably secured to the first shank by a coupling pin extending through the through hole and elongated slot. 16. The surgical cutting instrument of claim 10 , wherein the first and second blade contacting surfaces are substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis. 17. The surgical cutting instrument of claim 11 , wherein the protrusions include an inner side portion closest to the inner edge and an outer side portion closest to the outer edge, the inner side portion being spaced from the inner edge at least about 60% of the distance from the inner edge to the outer edge. 18. A method of attaching a cutting blade to a surgical cutting instrument, comprising: sliding a slot defined in a head of the cutting blade into a blade receiving recess of a driving shaft and against a first blade engaging surface; passing the driving shaft through a bore formed in a second blade engaging surface to engage the second blade engaging surface with the blade; and passing at least one blade engaging protrusion extending from at least one of the first and second blade engaging surfaces into at least one opening formed in the head of the blade. 19. The method of claim 18 , further comprising driving the cutting blade with the at least one protrusion where the at least one protrusion extends out beyond a midline of at least one of the first and second blade engaging surface between an inner edge and an outer edge to minimize movement forces on an interior of the blade. 20.
