A solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) electrolyte composition includes zirconia stabilized with scandia, and at least one of magnesia, zinc oxide, indium oxide, and gallium oxide, and optionally ceria in addition to the oxides above.

The invention claimed is: 1. An electrolyte composition for a solid oxide fuel cell, wherein the electrolyte composition is characterized by a formula Zr 1-w-y-z Sc w Ce z In y O d , wherein 0<w≦0.182, wherein 0<y≦0.164, wherein 0.008≦z≦0.01, and wherein 1.8≦d≦2. 2. The electrolyte composition of claim 1 , wherein 0<w≦0.164. 3. The electrolyte composition of claim 1 , wherein 0.072≦w≦0.182, and wherein 0<y≦0.1098. 4. The electrolyte composition of claim 1 , wherein w=0.182−y, wherein y=0.018, and wherein z=0.009. 5. The electrolyte composition of claim 1 , wherein w=0.164−y, and wherein z=0.009.
