A device, system and method for orthopedic spine surgery using a novel screw-based retractor, disclosed herein, that allows for access to the spine through a minimally or less invasive approach. The retractor device is designed to be coupled to a pedicle screw and then to have opposed arms of the retractor spread apart to open the wound proximally. The retractor is removed by pulling it out of the wound whereby the retractor is deformed to pass over the pedicle screw head. The retractor is intended to be made of a stiff plastic material, sterile packaged and disposable after one use. A system and method for using the retractor and performing a minimally invasive spine surgical procedure are also disclosed.

What is claimed is: 1. A kit for spinal surgery comprising: a sterile enclosure; a first surgical retractor enclosed within the sterile enclosure, the first surgical retractor including: an elongate member bendable radially outwards to retract surrounding tissue; and a coupling region at a distal end of the elongate member, the coupling region including an opening at a distal end thereof and at least one relief region configured to permit the first surgical retractor to separate from a head of a bone screw coupled thereto upon application of a force; and a second surgical retractor enclosed within the sterile enclosure, the second surgical retractor including: first and second retracting members; and a coupling region coupled with the first and second retracting members, the coupling region including an opening configured to receive a shank of the bone screw and at least one relief region configured to permit the second surgical retractor to separate from the head of the bone screw upon application of a force. 2. The kit for spinal surgery according to claim 1 , further comprising a surgical instrument selected from the group consisting of: a guide wire, a dilator, a scalpel, and a bone biopsy needle. 3. The kit for spinal surgery according to claim 1 , wherein at least one of the dilator, the scalpel, or the bone biopsy needle is cannulated. 4. The kit for spinal surgery according to claim 1 , further comprising a surgical rod configured to be secured in the head of the bone screw. 5. The kit for spinal surgery according to claim 1 , wherein the elongate member of the first surgical retractor is rotatable relative to the bone screw when the elongate member is coupled to the bone screw. 6. The kit for spinal surgery according to claim 1 , wherein the coupling region of the first surgical retractor includes an interior surface having a generally concave spherical geometry that is adapted to mate with the head of the bone screw. 7. The kit for spinal surgery according to claim 1 , wherein the coupling region of the first surgical retractor includes an outer surface having a generally convex geometry. 8. The kit for spinal surgery according to claim 1 , wherein the elongate member of the first surgical retractor includes first and second surgical retractor blades transitionable between a first state in which the first and second surgical retractor blades are substantially parallel to each other and a second state in which the first and second surgical retractor blades define a substantially V-shaped configuration. 9. The kit for spinal surgery according to claim 1 , wherein the opening of the first or second surgical retractor has a diameter larger than a diameter of the shank of the bone screw and smaller than a diameter of the head of the bone screw. 10. The kit for spinal surgery according to claim 1 , wherein the at least one relief region of the first surgical retractor is defined by at least one slit extending from the opening. 11. The kit for spinal surgery according to claim 1 , further comprising a bone screw disposed in the sterile enclosure. 12. A kit for spinal surgery comprising: a first surgical retractor including: an elongate member bendable to retract surrounding tissue; and a coupling region including an opening and at least one relief region configured to permit the first surgical retractor to separate from a head of a bone screw coupled thereto upon application of a force; and a second surgical retractor including: first and second retracting members; and a coupling region coupled with the first and second retracting members, the coupling region disposed at a distal end of the second surgical retractor, the coupling region including an opening configured to receive a shank of the bone screw and at least one relief region configured to permit the second surgical retractor to separate from the head of the bone screw upon application of a force to disengage the second surgical retractor from the head of the bone screw, wherein the first retracting member is bendable relative to the second retracting member. 13. The kit for spinal surgery according to claim 12 , further comprising a sterile enclosure housing the first and second surgical retractors. 14. The kit for spinal surgery according to claim 13 , further comprising a surgical rod configured to be received between the first and second retracting members of the second surgical retractor. 15. The kit for spinal surgery according to claim 12 , further comprising a surgical instrument selected from the group consisting of: a guide wire, a dilator, a scalpel, and a bone biopsy needle. 16. The kit for spinal surgery according to claim 15 , wherein at least one of the dilator, the scalpel, or the bone biopsy needle is cannulated. 17. The kit for spinal surgery according to claim 15 , wherein the first and second retracting members of the second surgical retractor are transitionable between a first state in which the first and second retracting members are substantially parallel to each other and a second state in which the first and second retracting members define a substantially V-shaped configuration. 18. The kit for spinal surgery according to claim 12 , further comprising a bone screw disposed in the sterile enclosure. 19. The kit for spinal surgery according to claim 18 , wherein the first and second retracting members of the second surgical retractor are rotatable relative to the bone screw when the second surgical retractor is coupled to the bone screw. 20. The kit for spinal surgery according to claim 12 , wherein the at least one relief region of the second surgical retractor is defined by at least one slit extending from the opening. 21. The kit for spinal surgery according to claim 12 , wherein the coupling region of the second surgical retractor includes an interior surface having a generally concave spherical geometry that is adapted to mate with the head of the bone screw. 22. The kit for spinal surgery according to claim 12 , wherein the coupling region of the second surgical retractor includes an outer surface having a generally convex geometry.
