Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Content stored on a server may be selected using a user device and enabled on a central device. The identity of the central device may be authenticated without transmitting user credentials corresponding to the user, user device, user account, etc. A central device identifier can be sent to the server via the user device. An encrypted version of the central device identifier may be returned to the user device and to the central device. The central device can send the encrypted and unencrypted version of the identifier to the server, and the server can transmit the desired content to the remote device based on a comparison of the encrypted and unencrypted identifier.

First claim

The invention claimed is: 1. A method comprising: receiving a first content activation request from a first device, the first content activation request omitting user identifying credentials; accepting the request when the first device is within a predetermined physical proximity of a second device; assigning a permission level to the first device based on a proximity of the first device to the second device, where a higher permission level is assigned when the first device is closer to the second device; receiving an identifying address corresponding to the second device; providing the first content to the second device based on the identifying address; receiving a control command from the first device; and causing the first content to be played on the second device based on the control command and the assigned permission level. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first content comprises a media file. 3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the media file comprises an audio file. 4. The method of claim 2 , wherein the media file comprises a video file. 5. The method of claim 2 , further comprising: receiving a second content activation request from a third user device; adding the second content to a content queue; receiving an identifying address corresponding to the second device from the third user device; providing the second content to the second device based on the identifying address; and activating the second content. 6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the first device and the third user device are in communication proximity to a central device. 7. The method of claim 5 , wherein the first device and the third user device are approved by a master user prior to submitting content activation requests. 8. The method of claim 5 , wherein the first device or the third user device is assigned control permissions. 9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the control permissions includes at least one element selected from the group consisting of a rewind element, a play element, a pause element, a fast forward element, a slide element and a skip element. 10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first device comprises a mobile device. 11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first device comprises a personal computing device. 12. The method of claim 1 , further comprising enabling the first content. 13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first content activation request comprises a timestamp. 14. The method of claim 13 , further comprising: comparing a current time to the time stamp; determining that the current time is within a threshold amount of time from the time stamp; and providing the first content based on the determination. 15. A system comprising: a second device including circuitry configured to receive a transmitted first content activation request from a first device, the receiving comprising accepting the request when the first device is within a predetermined physical proximity of the second device, the second device further being configured to assign a permission level to the first device based on a proximity of the first device to the second device, where a higher permission level is assigned when the first device is closer to the second device, and further configured to transmit an identifying address corresponding to the second device to the first device when the request is accepted, to receive the first content based on the identifying address, receive a control command from the first device, and play the first content based on the control command and the assigned permission level. 16. The system of claim 15 , wherein the first content comprises a media file. 17. The system of claim 15 , wherein the first device comprises a mobile device. 18. The system of claim 15 , wherein the first device comprises a personal computing device. 19. The system of claim 15 , wherein the first content activation request comprises a timestamp. 20. The system of claim 19 , further comprising a server configured to: receive the first content activation request and the identifying address corresponding to the second device from the first device; compare a current time to the time stamp; determine that the current time is within a threshold amount of time from the time stamp; and provide the first content based on the determination. 21. The system of claim 20 , further configured to: receive a second content activation request from a third device; add the second content to a content queue; receive the identifying address corresponding to the second device from the third device; provide the second content to the second device based on the identifying address; and play the second content. 22. The system of claim 21 , wherein the first device and the third device are in communication proximity to the second device. 23. The system of claim 21 , wherein the first device and the third device are approved by a master user prior to submitting content activation requests. 24. The system of claim 21 , wherein the first device or the third device is assigned control permissions. 25. The method of claim 24 , wherein the control permissions includes at least one element selected from the group consisting of a rewind element, a play element, a pause element, a fast forward element, a slide element and a skip element.
