What is claimed is: 1. A fluid for treating a subterranean formation comprising: a solvent; a crosslinkable component; and a crosslinking composition comprising a spread crosslinker, the spread crosslinker having a plurality of headgroups separated by an intervening spacer that is covalently bound to the plurality of headgroups, wherein each of the plurality of headgroups comprises at least one ring of at least five atoms, where at least two of the atoms in the at least one ring of the plurality of headgroups are chelated polyvalent metal atoms. 2. The fluid for treating a subterranean formation of claim 1 , wherein the at least two chelated polyvalent metal atoms of the plurality of headgroups are the same or different, and selected from the group consisting of aluminum, zirconium, and titanium. 3. The fluid for treating a subterranean formation of claim 1 , wherein the spread crosslinker has three or four headgroups. 4. The fluid for treating a subterranean formation of claim 1 , wherein the intervening spacer is: an alkylene group having 1 to about 40 carbon atoms; an arylene group having about 5 to about 40 carbon atoms; an arylalkylene group having about 6 to about 40 carbon atoms; or an alkylarylene group having about 6 to about 40 carbon atoms. 5. The fluid for treating a subterranean formation of claim 1 , wherein the spread crosslinker has a first headgroup, a second headgroup and a third headgroup, the first headgroup contains two or more rings with each ring containing five, six, or seven atoms; the second headgroup contains two or more rings with each ring containing five, six, or seven atoms; and/or the third headgroup contains two or more rings with each ring containing five, six, or seven atoms. 6. The fluid for treating a subterranean formation of claim 1 , wherein the spread crosslinker comprises one or more compounds derived from a reaction of one or more chelating agents with a compound of formula V: where R 1 is: an alkylene group having 1 to about 40 carbon atoms, an arylene group having about 5 to about 40 carbon atoms, an arylalkylene group having about 6 to about 40 carbon atoms, or an alkylarylene group having about 6 to about 40 carbon atoms; and R 2 , R 3 , R 4 , R 5 , R 6 and R 7 may be the same or different, and are selected from the group consisting of aluminum, zirconium, and titanium. 7.
