Articles of manufacture, products, and packaging methods are provided that include collapsible container. Collapsible containers provided herein can define an open interior space with a peripheral side wall having a top edge and a bottom edge and a bottom wall attached to the bottom edge of the side wall. The bottom wall can include a displaceable portion in an expanded configuration that extends below the bottom edge of the side wall and adapted to being displaced to a collapsed configuration that extends above the bottom edge of the side wall. Product constituents (e.g., pouches of smokeless tobacco) can be placed in a collapsible container provided herein while the collapsible container is in its expanded configuration. After installing a lid onto a collapsible container to enclose the product within the collapsible container, the container can be collapsed to its collapsed configuration.

What is claimed is: 1. A collapsible container defining an open interior space, the collapsible container comprising: a peripheral side wall having a top edge and a bottom edge; and a bottom wall attached to the bottom edge of the side wall, the bottom wall including a displaceable portion in an expanded configuration that extends below the bottom edge of the side wall and adapted to being displaced to a collapsed configuration that extends above the bottom edge of the side wall; wherein the displaceable portion comprises a conical side wall extending from the bottom wall that forms a truncated cone shape; and wherein the bottom wall comprises a variable wall thickness with a thinner wall portion at the center of the bottom wall compared to the outer periphery of the bottom wall, and the variable wall thickness forms a concave surface on an exterior surface of the bottom wall. 2. The collapsible container of claim 1 , wherein the bottom wall further includes a fixed bottom portion disposed about the displaceable portion, wherein the fixed bottom portion is essentially free of displacement upon displacement of the displaceable portion. 3. The collapsible container of claim 2 , wherein the fixed bottom portion is annular and essentially co-planar with a plane defined by the bottom edge, whereby the fixed bottom portion provides a base in the collapsed configuration, whereas in the expanded configuration the displaceable portion, rather than the fixed bottom portion, provides a base. 4. The collapsible container of claim 1 , wherein the collapsible container is made of a polymeric material. 5. The collapsible container of claim 1 , further comprising a lid that releasably engages with a top peripheral region of the side wall, wherein the open interior space is fully enclosed when the lid is engaged with the top peripheral region of the side wall. 6. The collapsible container of claim 5 , wherein the lid is made of metal. 7. The collapsible container of claim 5 , wherein the top peripheral region is configured to provide a snap-fit engagement with the lid. 8. The collapsible container of claim 1 , further comprising a tobacco product disposed in the open interior space. 9. The collapsible container of claim 1 , wherein the volume reduces by 10-30% when the displaceable portion is collapsed. 10. The collapsible container of claim 1 , wherein the displaceable portion extends 0.05-0.20 inches below the bottom edge of the side wall. 11. The collapsible container of claim 1 , wherein the expanded configuration and the collapsed configuration of the displaceable portion are physically stable configurations with lower internal mechanical stresses than all other potential configurations of the displaceable portion located in between the expanded configuration and the collapsed configuration. 12. The collapsible container of claim 1 , wherein the bottom wall further includes a fixed bottom portion disposed about the displaceable portion, wherein the fixed bottom portion is essentially free of displacement upon displacement of the displaceable portion, wherein the fixed bottom portion is annular and essentially co-planar with a plane defined by the bottom edge, whereby the fixed bottom portion provides a base in the collapsed configuration having a first width, whereas in the expanded configuration the displaceable portion, rather than the fixed bottom portion, provides a base, said displaced portion having a second width, said second width being a majority fraction of said first width. 13. A collapsible container defining an open interior space, the collapsible container comprising: a peripheral side wall having a top edge and a bottom edge; and a bottom wall attached to the bottom edge of the side wall, the bottom wall including a displaceable portion in an expanded configuration that extends below the bottom edge of the side wall and adapted to being displaced to a collapsed configuration that extends above the bottom edge of the side wall, wherein the displaceable portion comprises a conical side wall extending from the bottom wall that forms a truncated cone shape; wherein the bottom wall comprises a variable wall thickness with a thinner wall portion at the center of the bottom wall compared to the outer periphery of the bottom wall, and the variable wall thickness forms a concave surface on an exterior surface of the bottom wall; and wherein the bottom wall further includes a fixed bottom portion disposed about the displaceable portion, wherein the fixed bottom portion is essentially free of displacement upon displacement of the displaceable portion, wherein the fixed bottom portion is annular and essentially co-planar with a plane defined by the bottom edge, whereby the fixed bottom portion provides a base in the collapsed configuration having a first width, whereas in the expanded configuration the displaceable portion, rather than the fixed bottom portion, provides a base, said displaced portion having a second width, said second width being a majority fraction of said first width. 14. A packaged smokeless tobacco product, comprising: a container defining an interior space, the container including a peripheral side wall having a top edge and a bottom edge, and a bottom wall attached to the bottom edge of the peripheral side wall with a displaceable portion adapted to be forcibly reconfigured between an expanded position defining an increased container volume and a collapsed position defining a decreased container volume, wherein the displaceable portion comprises a conical side wall extending from the bottom wall that forms a truncated cone shape, and wherein the bottom wall comprises a variable wall thickness with a thinner wall portion at the center of the bottom wall compared to the outer periphery of the bottom wall, and the variable wall thickness forms a concave surface on an exterior surface of the bottom wall; a tobacco product disposed in the interior space; a lid that releasably engages with a top peripheral region of the peripheral side wall, to fully enclose the interior space when the lid is engaged with the top peripheral region of the peripheral side wall; and a label that surrounds an outer surface of the peripheral side wall and contacts a portion of the lid. 15. The packaged smokeless tobacco product of claim 14 , wherein the label hermetically seals the container and the lid. 16. The packaged smokeless tobacco product of claim 14 , wherein the tobacco product comprises a plurality of pouches containing tobacco.
