Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Various embodiments are directed to a flexible battery structure comprising patterned active layers. An example battery structure comprises a sheet of current collector material, first and second active layers, and a first electrolyte layer. The first active layer may be disposed on the sheet and may comprise a plurality of active material portions and a plurality of slots, where each of the plurality of slots separates a set of at least to adjacent active material portions.

What is claimed is: 1. A flexible battery structure, the battery structure comprising: a current collector layer comprising a metal sheet; a cathode layer positioned on and substantially parallel to the current collector layer, wherein the cathode layer comprises a plurality of cathode portions positioned on the metal sheet, wherein a first cathode portion and a second cathode portion selected from the plurality of cathode portions are separated by a cathode slot, wherein a width of the cathode slot is substantially equal to a thickness of the cathode portions; an electrolyte layer positioned adjacent and substantially parallel to the cathode layer; and an anode layer positioned adjacent and substantially parallel to the electrolyte layer, wherein the anode layer comprises a plurality of anode portions, wherein a first anode portion and a second anode portion selected from the plurality of anode portions are separated by an anode slot, and wherein the anode slot is positioned to align with the cathode slot. 2. The battery structure of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of cathode portions are positioned on a first side of the metal sheet, and further comprising a second cathode layer comprising a plurality of second layer cathode portions positioned on a second side of the metal sheet opposite the first side. 3. The battery structure of claim 2 , wherein the plurality of second layer cathode portions comprises a first cathode portion and a second cathode portion separated by a second layer cathode slot, wherein the second layer cathode slot is positioned to align with the cathode slot and the anode slot. 4. The battery structure of claim 1 , wherein the cathode layer comprises a plurality of cathode slots including the cathode slot, and wherein the plurality of cathode slots comprises a first set of cathode slots oriented on the metal sheet parallel to a first direction, and a second set of cathode slots oriented on the metal sheet parallel to a second direction substantially perpendicular to the first direction. 5. A flexible battery structure, the battery structure comprising: a current collector layer; a first active layer disposed on the current collector layer, wherein the first active layer comprises a plurality of active material portions and a plurality of slots, wherein each of the plurality of slots separates a set of at least two adjacent active material portions, wherein each of the plurality of slots are either empty or at least partially filled with a flexible material that is more flexible than the plurality of active material portions; an electrolyte layer positioned substantially parallel to the first active layer; a second active layer positioned substantially parallel to the first active layer; and a packaging layer covering at least a portion of the current collector layer. 6. The battery structure of claim 5 , wherein the plurality of slots comprises a first set of slots oriented in a first direction and a second set of slots oriented in a second direction that is not parallel to the first direction. 7. The battery structure of claim 5 , wherein the plurality of slots are arranged in at least one pattern comprising at least one of a diamond pattern or a herringbone pattern. 8. The battery structure of claim 5 , wherein the plurality of slots is arranged in a pattern comprising a plurality of repeating chevrons. 9. The battery structure of claim 5 , wherein each of the plurality of active material portions comprises a protrusion that is received into a recess formed by at least one adjacent active material portion selected from the plurality of active material portions. 10. The battery structure of claim 5 , wherein a width of each of the plurality of slots is substantially equal to a thickness of the first active layer. 11. The battery structure of claim 5 , further comprising an adhesion layer positioned between the current collector layer and the first active layer to adhere the current collector layer to the first active layer. 12. The battery structure of claim 5 , wherein the first active layer is disposed on a first side of the current collector layer and the second active layer is disposed on a second side of the current collector layer, wherein the second active layer comprises a second plurality of active material portions and a second plurality of slots, and wherein the second plurality of slots are positioned to substantially align with the plurality of slots. 13. The battery structure of claim 5 , wherein the first active layer is disposed on a first side of the current collector layer, and further comprising a third active layer disposed on a second side of the current collector layer. 14. The battery structure of claim 5 , wherein the battery structure comprises a first cell region and a second cell region separated by a hinge region, wherein at least a portion of the current collector layer and the respective layers of the flexible battery structure are substantially continuous across the first cell region, the second cell region and the hinge region, and wherein at least one of the first active layer or the second active layer is omitted from the hinge region. 15. The battery structure of claim 14 , wherein the first cell region is folded towards the second cell region at the hinge region. 16. The battery structure of claim 5 , wherein the width of each of the plurality of slots is less than ten times the thickness of the plurality of active material portions. 17. The battery structure of claim 5 , wherein the electrolyte layer comprises a thixotropic material. 18. The battery structure of claim 5 , wherein the second active layer comprises a plurality of second active material portions and a plurality of second slots, wherein each of the plurality of second slots separates a set of at least two adjacent second active material portions. 19. The battery structure of claim 18 , wherein the plurality of second slots are positioned to substantially align with the plurality of slots. 20. A flexible battery structure, the battery structure comprising: a current collector layer; a first active layer disposed on the current collector layer, wherein the first active layer comprises a plurality of active material portions, each active material portion being separated from an adjacent active material portion by one of a plurality of slots; a second active layer positioned substantially parallel to the first active layer; an electrolyte layer positioned between the first active layer and the second active layer, wherein the electrolyte layer includes a plurality of slits, wherein each of the plurality of slits is substantially aligned with a corresponding one of the plurality of slots; and a packaging layer covering at least a portion of the current collector layer. 21. The flexible battery structure of claim 20 , wherein the plurality of slots comprises a first set of slots oriented in a first direction and a second set of slots oriented in a second direction that is not parallel to the first direction. 22.
