Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A flashlight having a LED directly mounted to a top surface of a heat sink without the use of a printed circuit board and two mechanical spiral engagement systems, one in the housing, the other in a head assembly, such that the LED is turned on when power from an electrical circuit is applied to the heatsink which is thermally connected to a first electrically conductive member of the LED and a second electrically conductive member of the LED which is insulated within the heatsink from the heatsink, and the light provided by the LED may be varied by rotating the head assembly relative to the housing while the heat sink, the switch assembly and the power source remain stationary.

What is claimed is: 1. A flashlight, comprising: a housing which is thermally and electrically conductive having a first mechanical spiral engagement system; a head assembly that includes a second mechanical spiral engagement system that engages the first mechanical spiral engagement system when the head assembly is coupled to the housing; a light emitting diode (“LED”) having a first and a second electrically conductive member; a thermally and electrically conductive heatsink having a top surface, said heatsink being held within and in thermal and electrical contact with the housing; an electrical insulating material held within the heatsink; a power source held within the housing; and a switch assembly; wherein the light provided by the LED may be varied by rotating the head assembly relative to the housing while the heat sink, the switch assembly and the power source remain stationary; wherein the LED is mounted to the top surface with the first electrically conductive member thermally and electrically directly connected to the heatsink without the use of a printed circuit board and the second electrically conductive member is electrically isolated from the heatsink by the electrical insulating material; and wherein the LED is turned on when power from an electrical circuit is applied to the heatsink and the second electrically conductive member. 2. The flashlight of claim 1 , wherein the housing is a barrel and the heat sink is press fit into a forward portion of the barrel. 3. The flashlight of claim 1 , wherein the housing is a barrel and the heat sink is removably secured with the flashlight barrel by a mechanical means. 4. The flashlight of claim 1 , wherein the first mechanical spiral engagement system is a first set of threads and the second mechanical spiral engagement system is a second set of threads. 5. A flashlight, comprising: a housing having a set of threads; a head assembly including a spiral nut that includes another set of threads that engage the set of threads when the head assembly is coupled to the housing; an LED fixedly mounted to a top surface of a heat sink fixedly held by the housing; a switch assembly; and a power source; wherein the heat sink, the switch assembly and the power source are part of an electrical circuit when the LED light source module emits light; wherein the light provided by the LED may be varied by rotating the head assembly relative to the housing while the heat sink, the switch assembly and the power source remain stationary; wherein the LED is mounted to the top surface with a first electrically conductive member thermally and electrically directly connected to the heatsink without the use of a printed circuit board and a second electrically conductive member is electrically isolated from the heatsink by an electrical insulating material; and wherein the LED is turned on when power from the electrical circuit is applied to the heatsink and the second electrically conductive member.
