A stent made from an ultra high molecular weight bioabsorbable polymer is disclosed herein. The bioabsorbable polymer can have a Mw greater than 1 million g/mole or greater than 2 million g/mole. Methods of making the ultra high molecular weight polymer stent without degrading the molecular weight are further disclosed.

What is claimed is: 1. A stent comprising a scaffolding including a plurality of structural elements comprising: an abluminal layer and a luminal layer; wherein one of the layers is an ultra high molecular weight (UHMW) layer made from an UHMW bioabsorbable polymer having a weight average molecular weight greater than 1 million g/mole, and wherein the other layer is a low molecular weight (LMW) layer made from a LMW bioabsorbable polymer having a weight average molecular weight of between 50,000-300,000 g/mole. 2. The stent of claim 1 , wherein the UHMW bioabsorbable polymer and the LMW polymer are poly(L-lactide). 3. The stent of claim 1 , wherein a ratio of the thicknesses of the UHMW layer to the LMW layer is between 1000:1 and 2:1. 4. The stent of claim 1 , wherein the LMW layer includes a therapeutic substance dispersed within the LMW bioabsorbable polymer. 5. The stent of claim 1 , wherein sidewalls of the structural elements are free of material different from the UHMW layer and the LMW layer.
