Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Various embodiments of a programmable barrier alarm are described. In one embodiment, a programmable barrier alarm comprises a magnet and a sensor, the sensor comprising a magnetic field detector for sensing a magnetic field produced by the magnet and for producing an electronic signal associated with the magnetic field, a processor, and, a memory for storing an alarm threshold value and processor-executable instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the sensor to, in a calibration mode of operation, calculate the alarm threshold value based on a first magnetic field sensed by the magnetic field detector when the barrier is in the closed position, and in a normal mode of operation, compare the electronic signal from the magnetic field detector to the alarm threshold value, and generate an alarm signal if the electronic signal falls below the alarm threshold value.

We claim: 1. A programmable barrier alarm for monitoring a barrier, comprising: a magnet and a sensor, comprising: a magnetic field detector for sensing a magnetic field produced by the magnet and for producing an electronic signal associated with the magnetic field; a processor; and a memory for storing an alarm threshold value and processor-executable instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the sensor to in a calibration mode of operation: determine a first magnetic field sensed by the magnetic field detector when the barrier is in the closed position; determine a second magnetic field sensed by the magnetic field detector when the barrier is in an open position; and calculate the alarm threshold value based on the first magnetic field value and the second magnetic field value; and in a normal mode of operation, compare the electronic signal from the magnetic field detector to the alarm threshold value, and generate an alarm signal if the electronic signal falls below the alarm threshold value. 2. The barrier alarm of claim 1 , wherein the sensor further comprises a user interface for providing a signal to the processor indicative of when the barrier is in the closed position. 3. The barrier alarm of claim 1 , wherein the sensor further comprises a user interface for providing a signal to the processor indicative of when the barrier is in the open position. 4. The barrier alarm of claim 1 , wherein the second magnetic field value is determined when the magnetic field, as determined by the magnetic field detector, is stable for a predetermined time period. 5. The barrier alarm of claim 1 , wherein the alarm threshold level is a predetermined value less than the first magnetic field value. 6. The barrier alarm of claim 1 , wherein the alarm threshold level is a percentage of a difference between the first magnetic field value the second magnetic field value. 7. The barrier alarm of claim 1 , wherein the second magnetic field value is a fixed value that is pre-programmed into the memory. 8. The barrier alarm of claim 1 , further comprising: an instrumentation amplifier having an adjustable gain, for providing the gain to the electronic signal from the magnetic field detector and for generating an amplified electronic signal; wherein the processor is further configured to: compare the amplified electronic signal from the instrumentation amplifier to a desired value when the barrier is in a closed position; and adjust the gain of the instrumentation amplifier when the amplified electronic signal is not equal to the desired value until the amplified electronic signal is equal to the desired value. 9. The barrier alarm of claim 8 , wherein the processor is further configured to: compare the amplified electronic signal to the first magnetic field value; and generate an alarm signal if the amplified electronic signal value exceeds the first magnetic field value. 10. A method for calibrating a programmable barrier alarm that is monitoring a barrier, the barrier alarm comprising a magnet and a sensor, the sensor comprising a memory, a processor, and a magnetic field detector, the method comprising: entering into a calibration mode of operation, and while in in the calibration mode of operation; detecting a magnetic field from the magnet by the magnetic field detector when the barrier is in a closed position; producing an electronic signal associated with the magnetic field by the magnetic field detector when the barrier is in the closed position; producing a first magnetic field value based on the electronic signal; producing a second magnetic field value based on the electronic signal when the barrier is in an open position; calculating the alarm threshold value based on the first magnetic field value and the second magnetic field value; and entering a normal mode of operation and, while in the normal mode of operation: comparing the electronic signal from the magnetic field detector to the alarm threshold value stored in memory; and generating an alarm signal if the electronic signal falls below the alarm threshold value. 11. The method of claim 10 , further comprising: receiving a signal from a user interface indicative of when the barrier is in the closed position; and calculating the first magnetic field value after the signal from the user interface is received. 12. The method of claim 10 , further comprising: receiving a signal from a user interface indicative of when the barrier is in the open position; and calculating the second magnetic field value after the signal from the user interface is received. 13. The method of claim 10 , wherein the second magnetic field value is calculated when the magnetic field, as determined by the magnetic field detector, is stable for a predetermined time period. 14. The method of claim 10 , wherein the alarm threshold level is a percentage of a difference between the first magnetic field value the second magnetic field value. 15. The method of claim 10 , wherein the second magnetic field value is a fixed value that is pre-programmed into the memory. 16. The method of claim 10 , further comprising: during the calibration mode of operation and when the barrier is in the closed position: providing the electronic signal to an instrumentation amplifier, the instrumentation amplifier having an adjustable gain; amplifying the electronic signal by the instrumentation amplifier to produce an amplified electronic signal; comparing the amplified electronic signal from the instrumentation amplifier to a desired value; and adjusting the gain of the instrumentation amplifier by the processor when the amplified electronic signal is not equal to the desired value until the amplified electronic signal is equal to the desired value. 17. The method of claim 16 , further comprising: during the normal mode of operation: comparing the amplified electronic signal to the first magnetic field value; and generating an alarm signal if the amplified electronic signal value exceeds the first magnetic field value.
