Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Low molecular weight polymers useful in aggregating mineral components in aqueous mineral slurries to release and separate individual components of the slurry, which may then be recovered from the slurry.

First claim

The invention claimed is: 1. A polymer comprising a water-soluble calcium- or magnesium-containing diacrylate copolymer with acrylamide wherein the polymer has an intrinsic viscosity of less than 5 dl/gm (measured in 1 M NaCl at 25 degrees C.). 2. The polymer of claim 1 wherein the polymer is substantially free of monovalent cations. 3. The polymer of claim 1 wherein only a single species of multivalent cation is present in the polymer. 4. The polymer of claim 1 wherein the polymer is a diacrylate/acrylamide/2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid (AMPS) terpolymer. 5. The polymer of claim 1 wherein said polymer contains calcium and has a calcium diacrylate content of at least 5 mole %. 6. The polymer of claim 1 wherein the polymer is branched. 7. The polymer of claim 6 wherein the branched polymer is prepared by reacting monomers comprising a source of calcium or magnesium, a source of acrylate, an acrylamide monomer, and a cross-linking agent. 8. The polymer of claim 7 wherein the monomers further comprise 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid (AMPS). 9. The polymer of claim 7 wherein the cross-linking agent is present in an amount in the range of 0.1 ppm to 5 ppm based on the total weight of said monomers. 10. The polymer of claim 1 wherein the copolymer further comprises 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid (AMPS). 11. The polymer of claim 1 wherein the polymer is prepared by solution polymerization, gel polymerization, dispersion polymerization, or emulsion polymerization. 12. A water-soluble calcium-containing diacrylate copolymer with at least one of acrylamide and 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid (AMPS), said copolymer having a calcium diacrylate content of at least 5 mole % and an intrinsic viscosity of less than 5 dl/gm (measured in 1 M NaCl at 25 degrees C.). 13. The polymer of claim 12 wherein the polymer is prepared by reacting monomers comprising a source of calcium cations, a source of acrylate, and acrylamide. 14. The polymer of claim 13 wherein the monomers further comprise 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid (AMPS).
