Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A vehicular exterior rearview mirror assembly includes a mirror head portion and a reflective element having a glass substrate and a mirror reflector coated at a surface of the glass substrate. The reflective element is configured to provide a rearward field of view of at least about 15 degrees relative to a side of the vehicle and provides a substantially undistorted reflected image as viewed by the vehicle driver. The glass substrate is formed utilizing a bending element having a free form curvature. The reflective element, when accommodated by the mirror head portion at the side of the vehicle and as viewed by the driver, includes an image plane that establishes an object plane. Coordinates of the image plane and of the object plane are determined, at least in part, by the mirror size and by the free form curvature of the bending element used to form the glass substrate.

The invention claimed is: 1. An exterior rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle, said exterior rearview mirror assembly comprising: a mirror head portion; a reflective element accommodated by said mirror head portion, said reflective element comprising a free-formed bent glass substrate and a mirror reflector coated at a surface of said free-formed bent glass substrate; wherein said reflective element is configured to provide a rearward field of view of at least about 15 degrees relative to a side of a vehicle equipped with said exterior rearview mirror assembly and wherein said reflective element provides a substantially undistorted reflected image as viewed by a driver of the equipped vehicle; wherein said reflective element has a width dimension of less than about 15 cm and a height dimension of less than about 9 cm; wherein said free-formed bent glass substrate is formed utilizing a bending element having a free form curvature; wherein said reflective element, when accommodated by said mirror head portion at the side of the equipped vehicle and as viewed by the driver when normally operating the equipped vehicle, comprises an image plane that establishes an object plane; and wherein coordinates of the image plane and of the object plane are determined, at least in part, by the mirror size and by the free form curvature of the bending element used to form said free-formed bent glass substrate. 2. The exterior rearview mirror assembly of claim 1 , wherein the bending element is CNC formed to said free form curvature. 3. The exterior rearview mirror assembly of claim 1 , wherein said free-formed bent glass substrate has said mirror reflector coated at a rear surface thereof. 4. The exterior rearview mirror assembly of claim 1 , wherein said reflective element has a reduced size that is at least about 25 percent smaller than that of a conventional planar reflective element of equivalent field of view. 5. The exterior rearview mirror assembly of claim 1 , wherein the image plane provides a desired field of view to the driver viewing from the driver's view point, and wherein the object plane represents the field of view of the driver at a location rearward of the equipped vehicle. 6. The exterior rearview mirror assembly of claim 1 , wherein said mirror head portion is mountable at a driver-side of the equipped vehicle and wherein said reflective element comprises a driver-side reflective element. 7. The exterior rearview mirror assembly of claim 1 , wherein said mirror head portion is mountable at a passenger-side of the equipped vehicle and wherein said reflective element comprises a passenger-side reflective element. 8. The exterior rearview mirror assembly of claim 1 , wherein said reflective element comprises a non-electro-optic reflective element. 9. The exterior rearview mirror assembly of claim 1 , wherein said reflective element comprises an electrochromic reflective element having a front substrate and a rear substrate and an electrochromic medium disposed between said front and rear substrates, and wherein said rear substrate comprises said free-formed bent glass substrate formed utilizing the bending element having the free form curvature. 10. The exterior rearview mirror assembly of claim 1 , wherein said reflective element is configured to provide a rearward field of view of at least about 20 degrees relative to the side of the equipped vehicle. 11. The exterior rearview mirror assembly of claim 1 , wherein said reflective element is configured to provide a rearward field of view of at least about 30 degrees relative to the side of the equipped vehicle. 12. The exterior rearview mirror assembly of claim 1 , wherein said reflective element is configured to provide a rearward field of view of at least about 35 degrees relative to the side of the equipped vehicle. 13. An exterior rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle, said exterior rearview mirror assembly comprising: a mirror head portion; a reflective element accommodated by said mirror head portion, said reflective element comprising a free-formed bent glass substrate and a mirror reflector coated at a surface of said free-formed bent glass substrate; wherein said reflective element is configured to provide a rearward field of view of at least about 20 degrees relative to a side of a vehicle equipped with said exterior rearview mirror assembly and wherein said reflective element provides a substantially undistorted reflected image as viewed by a driver of the equipped vehicle; wherein said reflective element has a width dimension of less than about 15 cm and a height dimension of less than about 9 cm; wherein said free-formed bent glass substrate is formed utilizing a bending element having a free form curvature; wherein said reflective element, when accommodated by said mirror head portion at the side of the equipped vehicle and as viewed by the driver when normally operating the equipped vehicle, comprises an image plane that establishes an object plane; wherein coordinates of the image plane and of the object plane are determined, at least in part, by the mirror size and by the free form curvature of the bending element used to form said free-formed bent glass substrate; wherein said reflective element has a reduced size that is at least about 25 percent smaller than that of a conventional planar reflective element of equivalent field of view; and wherein the image plane provides a desired field of view to the driver viewing from the driver's view point, and wherein the object plane represents the field of view of the driver at a location rearward of the equipped vehicle. 14. The exterior rearview mirror assembly of claim 13 , wherein the bending element is CNC formed to said free form curvature. 15. The exterior rearview mirror assembly of claim 13 , wherein said free-formed bent glass substrate has said mirror reflector coated at a rear surface thereof. 16.
