System and method for optimizing the consumption of power while maintaining performance in capacitive sensor arrays. A limited sensing area is used to improve the update rate and sensitivity of a row/column array of capacitive sensors. According to one embodiment, a method is provided for scanning a plurality of capacitive sensors by: detecting a stimulus in the field of capacitive sensors, scanning the field of capacitive sensors to determine the position of the stimulus. Once the position of the stimulus is determined, a subsection of the field comprising window corresponding to the position of the stimulus remains activated while the remaining sensors in the field are deactivated.

What is claimed is: 1. A method for scanning an array consisting of a plurality of capacitive sense elements, the method comprising: detecting a stimulus by scanning a first set of capacitive sense elements, wherein the first set of capacitive sense elements spans a region of the array and consists of less than all of the plurality of capacitive sense elements; determining a location of the detected stimulus; after determining the location, selecting, within the region, a second set of capacitive sense elements based on the determined location; wherein the second set of capacitive sense elements includes at least one capacitive sense element not included in the first set of capacitive sense elements; and wherein the first set of capacitive sense elements includes at least one capacitive sense element not included in the second set of capacitive sense elements; and tracking the stimulus by scanning the second set of capacitive sense elements. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the stimulus is provided by a finger. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second set of capacitive sense elements includes one or more capacitive sense elements corresponding to the determined location and one or more adjacent capacitive sense elements. 4. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining the location of the detected stimulus comprises determining the location according to a centroid positioning algorithm of activated capacitive sense elements. 5. The method of claim 1 , wherein scanning the second set of capacitive sense elements is continued to be performed while the stimulus is detected in the location. 6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: determining a motion of the stimulus based on the scan of the second set of capacitive sense elements; and selecting a third set of capacitive sense elements in accordance with the determined motion of the stimulus. 7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the motion of the stimulus comprises a displacement of the stimulus from one or more previous locations to the location of the stimulus detected during the scanning of the second set. 8. The method of claim 6 , wherein the third set of capacitive sense elements comprises at least one capacitive sense element of the second set of capacitive sense elements and a capacitive sense element corresponding to an expected subsequent location of the stimulus. 9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second set of capacitive sense elements includes a plurality of capacitive sense elements in proximity with the determined location. 10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the second set of capacitive sense elements further includes a second plurality of capacitive sense elements in proximity with a second location, distinct from the determined location. 11. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining the location of the detected stimulus comprises scanning the plurality of capacitive sense elements. 12. An apparatus comprising: an array consisting of a plurality of capacitive sense elements; and a controller coupled to the array, wherein the controller operates to: detect a stimulus by scanning a first set of the plurality of capacitive sense elements, wherein the first set of capacitive sense elements spans a region of the array and consists of less than all of the plurality of capacitive sense elements; determine a location of the detected stimulus; after the location is determined, select, within the region, a second set of the plurality of capacitive sense elements based on the determined location; wherein the second set of capacitive sense elements includes at least one capacitive sense element not included in the first set of capacitive sense elements; and wherein the first set of capacitive sense elements includes at least one capacitive sense element not included in the second set of capacitive sense elements; and track the stimulus by scanning the second set of the plurality of capacitive sense elements at a second sensitivity level. 13. The apparatus of claim 12 , wherein the stimulus is provided by a finger. 14. The apparatus of claim 12 , wherein the second set of capacitive sense elements includes one or more capacitive sense elements corresponding to the determined location and one or more adjacent capacitive sense elements. 15. The apparatus of claim 12 , wherein the second set of capacitive sense elements includes a plurality of capacitive sense elements in proximity with the determined location. 16. The apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the second set of capacitive sense elements further includes a second plurality of capacitive sense elements in proximity with a second location, distinct from the determined location. 17. The apparatus of claim 12 , wherein determining the location of the detected stimulus comprises scanning the plurality of capacitive sense elements. 18. A system comprising: an array consisting of a plurality of capacitive sense elements; and a controller coupled to the array, wherein the controller operates to: detect a stimulus by scanning a first set of the plurality of capacitive sense elements, wherein the first set of capacitive sense elements spans a region of the array and consists of less than all of the plurality of capacitive sense elements; determine a location of the detected stimulus; after the location is determined, select, within the region, a second set of the plurality of capacitive sense elements based on the determined location; wherein the second set of capacitive sense elements includes at least one capacitive sense element not included in the first set of capacitive sense elements; and wherein the first set of capacitive sense elements includes at least one capacitive sense element not included in the second set of capacitive sense elements; and track the stimulus by scanning the second set of the plurality of capacitive sense elements at a second sensitivity level. 19. The system of claim 18 , wherein at least one of the capacitive sense elements comprises: a conductive pad; surrounding ground; and a connection coupling the at least one capacitive sense element to the controller. 20. The system of claim 18 , wherein the second set of capacitive sense elements includes a plurality of capacitive sense elements in proximity with the determined location. 21. The system of claim 20 , wherein the second set of capacitive sense elements further includes a second plurality of capacitive sense elements in proximity with a second location, distinct from the determined location. 22. The system of claim 18 , wherein determining the location of the detected stimulus comprises scanning the plurality of capacitive sense elements.
