Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Embodiments provide a unidirectional multi-path kiln with two or more chambers and generally parallel flow paths extending through the kiln, on opposite sides, from charge entry portals at a first end of the kiln to charge exit portals at a second end of the kiln. Moist heated air flowing from the second heated chamber is received in the first chamber and circulated around the lumber charges with one or more fans. The lumber charges proceed in the same direction on the flow paths through the heated second chamber, which may be an existing kiln. Charge exit portals at the distal end of the kiln and/or intermediate charge portals between the second chamber and a third chamber may be provided with insulating members configured to reduce airflow from the second chamber through the charge exit portals.

What is claimed is: 1. An apparatus for drying lumber charges, comprising: an elongated enclosure having a first chamber, a second chamber, first and second charge portals disposed in a proximal end of the elongated enclosure, third and fourth charge portals disposed in a generally opposite distal end of the elongated enclosure, and a longitudinal axis; a first guide member extending from the first charge portal to the third charge portal through a first side of the elongated enclosure, wherein the first guide member defines a first flow path; a second guide member extending from the second charge portal to the fourth charge portal through a generally opposite second side of the elongated enclosure, wherein the second guide member defines a second flow path oriented generally parallel to the first flow path, the first and second flow paths extend in a first direction through the elongated enclosure, and the first and second guide members are disposed on generally opposite sides of the longitudinal axis; and a first insulating member operatively coupled with the third charge portal, the first insulating member configured to reduce airflow through the third charge portal. 2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the first insulating member is selectively operable to open and close the third charge portal. 3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the first insulating member is configured to be pushed aside by a passing lumber charge. 4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the first insulating member includes a door or a curtain. 5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the first chamber is positioned upstream of the second chamber, the elongated enclosure further includes a third chamber disposed downstream of the second chamber, and the third charge portal is located between the second chamber and the third chamber or at a downstream end of the third chamber. 6. The apparatus of claim 5 , wherein the third charge portal is located at the downstream end of the third chamber, and the elongated enclosure further includes an intermediate charge portal disposed between the second chamber and the third chamber. 7. The apparatus of claim 1 , further including a transport assembly configured to advance a first and a second one of the lumber charges simultaneously along the first and second guide members, respectively, in the first direction. 8. The apparatus of claim 1 , further including a first transport assembly configured to advance a first one of the lumber charges along the first guide member in the first direction and a second transport assembly configured to advance a second one of the lumber charges along the second guide member in the first direction. 9. The apparatus of claim 3 , further comprising a computing system operatively coupled with the first insulating member and configured to control a position of the first insulating member. 10. The apparatus of claim 9 , further comprising one or more sensors positioned to detect a lumber charge along the first flow path, wherein the computing system is configured to control the first insulating member based at least on data from the one or more sensors. 11. The apparatus of claim 10 , further including a transport system configured to advance a first and a second one of the lumber charges in the first direction along the first and second guide members, respectively, wherein the computing system is further configured to adjust a rate of travel of the lumber charges through the elongated enclosure. 12. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the computing system is further configured to monitor a moisture content of one or more of the lumber charges within the elongated enclosure and adjust said rate of travel or an environmental condition within the elongated enclosure based at least on said moisture content. 13. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the second chamber defines the distal end of the elongated enclosure, the first and second charge portals are located at an upstream end of the first chamber, and the third and fourth charge portals are located at a downstream end of the second chamber. 14. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the transport system includes a pusher device located near the proximal end of the elongate enclosure. 15. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the first chamber is disposed generally to one side of the longitudinal center axis, the first charge portal is disposed at an upstream end of the first chamber on the first side, and the second charge portal is disposed at an upstream end of the second chamber on the second side. 16. A method for converting an existing kiln to a unidirectional multi-path kiln, the method comprising: coupling at least a first chamber to at least a portion of the existing kiln to form an elongated enclosure with a first end, a generally opposite second end, and a longitudinal axis extending through the first and second ends, wherein the first end includes a first and a second charge portal and the second end includes a third and a fourth charge portal, and the longitudinal axis defines a first side and a generally opposite second side of the elongated enclosure; installing first and second guide members within the elongated enclosure such that the first guide member extends through the first side of the elongated enclosure from the first charge portal to the third charge portal along a first flow path, and the second guide member extends through the second side of the elongated enclosure from the second charge portal to the fourth charge portal along a second flow path; and operatively coupling a first insulating member with the third charge portal, wherein the first insulating member is configured to reduce airflow through the third charge portal. 17. The method of claim 16 , wherein operatively coupling the first insulating member with the third charge portal includes installing a door or a curtain in the third charge portal. 18. The method of claim 16 , further including operatively coupling a second insulating member with the fourth charge exit portal, wherein the second insulating member is configured to reduce airflow through the second charge exit portal from the second chamber. 19. The method of claim 16 , wherein the first insulating member is selectively operable to open and close the third charge portal. 20. The method of claim 16 , wherein coupling at least a first chamber to at least a portion of the existing kiln to form an elongated enclosure includes coupling the first chamber and a second chamber with generally opposite sides of the existing kiln such that the existing kiln is between the first chamber and the second chamber, and the third charge portal is located between the second and third chambers or at a distal end of the third chamber. 21. The method of claim 20 , wherein the third charge portal is located at the distal end of the third chamber, the method further including coupling a second insulating member with an intermediate charge portal located between the second and third chambers. 22.
