Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

We have disclosed systems and methods for portable performance monitoring of an individual during a physical activity. The systems and methods may include a personal computer configured to receive personal data from the individual. The systems and methods may also include a portable performance monitoring device that may be in communication with the personal computer and may have a display screen configured to display the personal data to the individual. The systems and methods may also include a server that may be in communication with the personal computer and the portable performance monitoring device and may have a database configured to store the personal data The systems and methods may be configured such that the personal data displayed on the display screen of the portable performance monitoring device and stored on the database of the server is configured to update based on the personal data received on the personal computer.

What is claimed is: 1. A personal athletic performance monitoring system configured to be used by an individual engaged in a fitness activity, the system comprising: a personal computer configured to receive personal data from the individual; a server in communication with the personal computer and having a database configured to store the personal data; and a portable performance monitoring device configured to wirelessly communicate with the server via a wireless wide area network and having a display screen configured to display the personal data to the individual; wherein the personal data displayed on the display screen of the portable performance monitoring device and stored on the database of the server is configured to update based on the personal data received on the personal computer. 2. The personal athletic performance monitoring system of claim 1 , wherein the portable performance monitoring device is further configured to receive the personal data from the individual. 3. The personal athletic performance monitoring system of claim 2 , wherein the personal computer is further configured to display the personal data to the individual. 4. The personal athletic performance monitoring system of claim 3 , wherein the personal data displayed on the personal computer and stored on the database of the server is configured to update based on the personal data received on the portable performance monitoring device. 5. The personal athletic performance monitoring system of claim 4 , wherein the displayed and the stored personal data updates automatically upon receiving the personal data. 6. The personal athletic performance monitoring system of claim 1 , wherein the personal data comprises one of the individual's name, age, gender, height, and weight. 7. The personal athletic performance monitoring system of claim 1 , wherein the personal data comprises heart rate data. 8. The personal athletic performance monitoring system of claim 7 , wherein the heart rate data comprises a resting heart rate of the individual. 9. The personal athletic performance monitoring system of claim 7 , wherein the heart rate data comprises a maximum heart rate of the individual. 10. The personal athletic performance monitoring system of claim 1 , wherein communication between the personal computer, the portable performance monitoring device, and the server comprises communication via the internet. 11. A method of sharing personal data within a personal athletic performance monitoring system configured to be used by an individual during a fitness activity, the method comprising: receiving on a portable performance monitoring device via wireless communication from a server, personal data entered into the personal athletic performance monitoring system on a personal computer; and the portable performance monitoring device displaying the personal data to the individual via a display screen of the portable performance monitoring device, wherein the displayed personal data updates automatically when updated personal data is entered on the personal computer. 12. The method of claim 11 , further comprising the portable performance monitoring device communicating the personal data via a wireless wide area network to a database configured to store the personal data. 13. The method of claim 11 , wherein the personal data comprises one of the individual's name, age, gender, height, and weight. 14. The method of claim 11 , wherein the personal data comprises heart rate data. 15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the heart rate data comprises a resting heart rate of the individual. 16. The method of claim 14 , wherein the heart rate data comprises a maximum heart rate of the individual. 17. The method of claim 14 , further comprising the portable performance monitoring device calculating the heart, rate data with a heart rate sensor before the heart rate data is entered into the personal athletic performance monitoring system. 18. The method of claim 11 , wherein the personal data is entered into the personal athletic performance monitoring system on the personal computer by the individual. 19. The method of claim 11 , wherein the personal data is displayed to the individual via the display screen of the portable performance monitoring device before the individual engages in the fitness activity. 20. The method of claim 11 , further comprising the portable performance monitoring device estimating the individual's loss of consumables based on the personal data. 21. The method of claim 20 , wherein the consumables comprise one of water, carbohydrates, and sodium.
