Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An actuator-controlled strike comprising a housing disposable within a doorframe and including a cavity for a spring latch and a dead latch of a mortise-type lockset. A keeper is pivotably mounted within the chamber to engage the spring latch. A pivotably mounted kicker cooperates with the keeper. A pivotably mounted dead latch release is supported by the keeper when the spring latch is within the strike. The keeper is released by the actuator and rotates into a position to ramp the spring latch out of the strike, also allowing the dead latch release to release the dead latch into the cavity, allowing the spring latch to be ramped out of the strike. Pivoting the keeper causes the kicker to urge the spring latch onto an exit ramp on a face of the keeper. The dead latch release can be installed in a plurality of different locations in the housing.

What is claimed is: 1. An actuator controlled strike for operating in conjunction with a spring latch and a dead latch of a lockset, said strike comprising: a) a housing having a cavity therein, said cavity configured for receiving said spring latch and said dead latch; and b) a dead latch platform configured for making contact with said dead latch and movable in a first direction into said cavity, wherein said dead latch platform is adjustably positionable in a second direction, wherein said second direction is perpendicular to said first direction. 2. The strike in accordance with claim 1 further comprising a faceplate having an opening for receiving said spring latch and said dead latch corresponding to positions of said spring latch and said dead latch in said lockset. 3. The strike in accordance with claim 1 wherein said housing includes a plurality of dead latch platform mounting features for receiving said dead latch platform in any two of said plurality of dead latch platform mounting features corresponding to any one of a plurality of arrangements of said spring latch and said dead latch. 4. The strike in accordance with claim 3 wherein said plurality of dead latch platform mounting features are notches. 5. The strike in accordance with claim 1 wherein said lockset is a mortise lockset. 6. An actuator controlled strike for operating in conjunction with a spring latch and a dead latch of a lockset, said strike comprising: a) a housing having a cavity therein, said cavity configured for receiving said spring latch and said dead latch, said housing having a longitudinal length longer than a width of said housing; and b) a dead latch platform configured for making contact with said dead latch and movable in a first direction into said cavity, wherein said dead latch platform is adjustably positionable in a second direction parallel with said longitudinal length of said housing, wherein said housing includes a plurality of dead latch platform mounting features for receiving said dead latch platform in any two of said plurality of dead latch platform mounting features corresponding to any one of a plurality of arrangements of said spring latch and said dead latch. 7. The strike in accordance with claim 6 wherein said plurality of dead latch platform mounting features are notches. 8. An actuator controlled strike for operating in conjunction with a spring latch and a dead latch of a lockset, said strike comprising: a) a housing having a cavity therein, said cavity configured for receiving said spring latch and said dead latch, said housing having a longitudinal length longer than a width of said housing; and b) a dead latch platform configured for making contact with said dead latch and movable in a first direction into said cavity, wherein said dead latch platform is adjustably positionable in a second direction parallel with said longitudinal length of said housing, wherein said housing includes a plurality of dead latch platform mounting features configured for selectively receiving said dead latch platform. 9. A method for unlatching a door, having a mortise lockset including a spring latch and a dead latch, the mortise lockset cooperating with a strike, wherein the strike includes a housing having a cavity therein, a keeper disposed in said cavity, wherein said keeper is movable between a first locked position and a second unlocked position, and a dead latch platform connected to said housing and movable in a first direction into said cavity, wherein said dead latch platform is movable between a first disabling position and a second enabling position, the door unlatching method comprising the steps of: a) moving said dead latch platform from said first disabling position toward said second enabling position; b) allowing said dead latch to move in said first direction toward said cavity by said moving of said dead latch platform; c) enabling said unlatching of said door by said movement of said dead latch in said first direction toward said cavity; wherein said enabling step c) further comprises the steps of: d) contacting said keeper by said spring latch upon a first movement of said door away from a closed position; and e) upon further movement of said door beyond said first movement and away from said closed position, moving said keeper from said first locked position toward said second unlocked position by said spring latch to unlatch said door. 10. The method in accordance with claim 9 wherein said keeper further includes a first ramp surface, and wherein said moving of said keeper in step e) further comprises the steps of: f) contacting said first ramp surface by said spring latch as said door is moved away from said closed position; and g) retracting said spring latch by said contacting in step f) to release said spring latch from said cavity. 11. The method in accordance with claim 10 wherein said housing further includes a second ramp surface, and wherein said retracting of said spring latch in step g) further comprises the step of: h) contacting said second ramp surface by said spring latch as said door is moved away from said closed position. 12. A method for unlatching a door, having a lockset including a spring latch and a dead latch, the lockset cooperating with a strike, wherein the strike includes a housing having a cavity therein, a keeper disposed in said cavity, wherein said keeper is movable between a first locked position and a second unlocked position, and a dead latch platform connected to said housing and movable in a first direction into said cavity, wherein said dead latch platform is movable between a first disabling position and a second enabling position, the door unlatching method comprising the steps of: a) moving said dead latch platform from said first disabling position toward said second enabling position; b) allowing said dead latch to move in said first direction toward said housing cavity by said moving of said dead latch platform; c) enabling said unlatching of said door by said movement of said dead latch in said first direction toward said housing cavity; wherein said enabling step c) further comprises the steps of: d) contacting said keeper by said spring latch upon a first movement of said door away from a closed position; and e) upon further movement of said door beyond said first movement and away from said closed position, moving said keeper from said first locked position toward said second unlocked position by said spring latch to unlatch said door. 13. The method in accordance with claim 12 wherein said keeper further includes a first ramp surface, and wherein said moving of said keeper in step e) further comprises the steps of: f) contacting said first ramp surface by said spring latch as said door is moved away from said closed position; and g) retracting said spring latch by said contacting in step f) to release said spring latch from said cavity. 14. The method in accordance with claim 13 wherein said housing further includes a second ramp surface, and wherein said retracting of said spring latch in step g) further comprises the step of: h) contacting said second ramp surface by said spring latch as said door is moved away from said closed position. 15. A method of adjusting a position of a dead latch platform in a strike, wherein said strike includes a housing having a cavity, a dead latch platform mounting feature configured for selectively receiving said dead latch platform, and a longitudinal length longer than a width of said housing, wherein said dead latch platform cooperates with a dead latch of a lockset, and wherei
