Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An aircraft fuel tank system is disclosed in which a vent tank is provided with an additional ullage vent for use, in combination with an eternal flame barrier means, when refuelling.

First claim

Opening claim text (preview).

The invention claimed is: 1. A flame barrier device for use with the vent tank of an aircraft fuel tank system, the flame barrier device comprising: a body comprising a first port and a second port and defining a conduit through the body arranged to provide fluid communication between the first and second ports; and a flame barrier disposed within the conduit and arranged to resist the passage of a flame front through the conduit; and the conduit further including a valve apparatus, wherein the body comprises a connector part arranged to substantially sealingly engage with an ullage vent of a vent tank of an aircraft fuel tank system so that the vent tank is vented to atmosphere via the flame barrier device, and wherein the valve apparatus is configured to open in response to the engagement of the connector part with the ullage vent of the vent tank. 2. A flame barrier device according to claim 1 in which the connector part comprises an elongate portion comprising the first port and arranged for insertion within a vent tank via an ullage vent. 3. A flame barrier device according to claim 2 in which the elongate portion is arranged to locate the first port within the ullage of the vent tank when the elongate portion is inserted in the vent tank. 4. A flame barrier device according to claim 1 comprising at least a first valve member arranged to co-operate with a second valve member so as to open the conduit to fluid communication with the vent tank when the connector part is engaged with an ullage vent of a vent tank. 5. A flame barrier device according to claim 4 in which the first and second valve members are provided on the connector part. 6. A flame barrier device according to claim 4 in which the first valve member is provided by the flame barrier device and the second valve member provided in the vent tank. 7. A flame barrier device according to claim 6 in which the second valve member comprises a vent pipe associated with the ullage vent. 8. A flame barrier device according to claim 1 in which the engagement of the connector part with the ullage vent is arranged to open a hatch closing the ullage vent. 9. A flame barrier device according to claim 8 in which the connector part is arranged to open the hatch and move the hatch along a vent pipe associated with the ullage vent so as to clear fluid from the vent pipe. 10. A flame barrier device according to claim 1 arranged with a fluid flow rate equal to or greater than that of the ullage vent so as not reduce the flow rate of fluid from the vent tank when engaged with the ullage vent.
