The invention claimed is:
1. A method for reducing matrix metalloproteinase enzyme 1 activity in skin or reducing oxidative damage to skin, comprising topically applying a composition comprising an effective amount of Myriophyllum spicatum extract to skin.
2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the composition is an emulsion.
3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the composition is a cream, lotion, or solution.
4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the composition includes from about 0.001% to about 5% by weight of the Myriophyllum spicatum extract.
5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the composition comprises a moisturization agent, an antioxidant, a structuring or thickening agent, and an emulsifier.
6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the composition further comprises a sunscreen agent.
7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the composition comprises a silicone containing compound.
8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the Myriophyllum spicatum extract is an aqueous extract, an alcoholic extract, or a combination thereof.
9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the extract is obtained from the whole plant of Myriophyllum spicatum.
10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the composition is applied to a fine line or wrinkle.
11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the composition further comprises water, glycerin, butylene glycol, phenoxyethanol, and disodium EDTA.
12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the composition further comprises an alpha-hydroxy acid selected from lactic acid or glycolic acid, or both.
13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the composition is a leave-on composition selected from a skin moisturizer, a sunscreen, a mask, an overnight cream, or a day cream.
14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the composition is a mask.
