Methods of treating bacterial infection by in a subject by administering a pharmaceutical composition including a celecoxib derivative are described. The compounds are particularly useful for treating infection by bacteria capable of growing inside macrophages, such as Myocobacteria tuberculosis.

What is claimed is: 1. A compound of formula I: wherein R 1 is selected from —NH 2 , —CO 2 H, —CO 2 Me, —CONH 2 , —CONHNH 2 , —CONHMe, —CO-piperazine, —CO-pyrrolidine, —CONH-glycine, —CH 2 CH 2 CO 2 Me, —CH 2 CH 2 CONH—C 1 -C 4 alkyl, —NHCO—C 1 -C 4 alkyl, —NHSO 2 NH 2 , —NHSO 2 N(Me) 2 , —NHCONH—C 1 -C 4 alkyl, —NHCONH 2 , —NHCO 2 —C 1 -C 4 alkyl; Ar is a substituted or unsubstituted phenyl, biphenyl, naphthalenyl, or anthracenyl group; X is C═O or O═S═O, and R 2 is a substituted or unsubstituted cycloalkyl, heterocycloalkyl, aryl, or heteroaryl group, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. 2. The compound of claim 1 , wherein R 1 is —CH 2 CH 2 CONH-Me and Ar is 4′-trifluoromethyl biphenyl.
