Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A system and method for recording events includes a user device having a recording service module receiving a booking and recording request, reserving recording resources of the user device in response to the booking request. A conflict resolving module resolves conflicts between previously booked events and the recording request. The recording service module books the recording request, determines a start time from the recording request and when the start time is reached, initiates recording of content, receives the content and provides recording information to a memory write module.

What is claimed is: 1. A method of operating a user device having a memory with stored content therein comprising: receiving a booking and recording request at a recording service module of the user device; reserving recording resources of the user device in response to the booking and recording request, said recording resources comprising a video pipeline comprising a tuner and space in memory for content associated with the booking and recording request; removing stored content from the memory to make room for recording request content based on the booking and recording request; resolving conflicts between previously booked events and the booking and recording request; booking the booking and recording request in response to resolving conflicts when conflicts exist to form a booked event at the recording services module; listing the booked event and program guide data for the content corresponding to the booked event in a list of booked events; displaying the list of booked events on a display associated with the device; determining a start time from the booking and recording request; when the start time is reached, initiating recording of the recording request content by providing recording information comprising a program information packet and rating information from the recording service module to a memory write module in the user device; receiving the recording request content at the memory write module; storing the recording request content in the memory using a write control module; and updating a playlist with the recording request content when the recording request content is available for viewing. 2. A method as recited in claim 1 wherein reserving recording resources comprises reserving a demultiplexer. 3. A method as recited in claim 1 wherein removing stored content from the memory comprises deleting low priority content from the memory. 4. A method as recited in claim 1 wherein removing stored content from the memory comprises deleting an oldest content from the memory. 5. A method as recited in claim 1 wherein providing recording information comprises providing a program information packet (PIP), rating information and copy guard information to the write module. 6. A method as recited in claim 1 wherein prior to receiving a booking and recording request, receiving program guide information from a satellite and wherein receiving a booking and recording request comprises recording and booking request in response to the program guide information. 7. A method as recited in claim 1 wherein the user device comprises a satellite television set top box. 8. A method as recited in claim 1 wherein the user device comprises a mobile user device. 9. A method as recited in claim 1 further comprising storing the content within the user device. 10. A method as recited in claim 1 wherein receiving the content comprises receiving the recording request content from a satellite. 11. A method as recited in claim 1 wherein receiving the recording request content comprises receiving the recording request content from a broadband terrestrial network. 12. A system comprising: a user device having a recording service module receiving a booking and recording request, reserving recording resources of the user device in response to the booking and recording request, said recording resources comprising a video pipeline comprising a tuner and space in memory for content associated with the booking and recording request, said user device comprising a memory having stored content therein; a conflict resolving module resolving conflicts between previously booked events and the recording request; a write control module; said recording service module removing stored content from the memory to make room for recording request content based on the booking and recording request, booking the recording request in response to resolving conflicts when conflicts exist to form a booked event at the recording services module; listing the booked event and program guide data for the content corresponding to the booked event in a list of booked events; displaying the list of booked events on a display associated with the device; determining a start time from the recording request, when the start time is reached, initiating recording of the recording request content by providing recording information comprising a program information packet and rating information from the recording service module to a memory write module in the user device and receiving the recording request content; said write control module storing the recording request content in the memory updating a playlist with the recording request content when the recording request content is available for viewing. 13. A system as recited in claim 12 wherein the recording service module reserves a demultiplexer. 14. A system as recited in claim 12 further comprising a satellite communicating program guide information to the user device and wherein the recording service module receiving a recording and booking request in response to the program guide information. 15. A system as recited in claim 12 wherein the user device comprises a satellite television set top box. 16. A system as recited in claim 12 wherein the user device comprises a mobile user device. 17. A system as recited in claim 12 further comprising a satellite communicating the recording request content to the user device. 18. A system as recited in claim 12 further comprising a broadband network communicating the recording request content to the user device.
