Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A valve having a first housing including a first lumen extending therethrough and a first disk-facing surface, a second housing including a second lumen extending therethrough and a second disk-facing surface, where the second housing is coupled to the first housing so that the second disk-facing surface faces the first disk-facing surface. A flexible disk has at least a portion of an outer edge of the disk extending away from a plane of a central portion of the disk, the outer edge contacting the first disk-facing surface, the disk including a slit extending therethrough which, when acted upon by a fluid pressure of at least a threshold level opens to permit fluid flow between the first and second lumens and which, when acted upon by a fluid pressure less than the threshold level, prevents fluid flow between the first and second lumens.

What is claimed is: 1. A valve housing having a longitudinal axis comprising: a first housing including a first lumen extending therethrough, the first housing including a first disk facing surface, the first disk facing surface having a first disk contacting surface located radially from a first point along the longitudinal axis, and a second disk contacting surface located radially from a second point along the longitudinal axis, wherein the first point is location radially outward relative to the second point; a second housing including a second lumen extending therethrough, the second housing including a second disk facing surface, the second disk facing surface including an outer perimeter and a protrusion, a portion of the space between the outer perimeter of the second disk facing surface and the protrusion defining a relief well; a flexible disk including at least one slit extending therethrough, the at least one slit intersecting a third point along the longitudinal axis, the flexible disk including a first surface facing the first disk facing surface of the first housing and a second surface facing the second disk facing surface of the second housing, at least a portion of the second surface of the flexible disk is compressed by the protrusion of the second disk facing surface to deform a portion of the flexible disk therein, at least a portion second surface of the flexible disk that is not compressed by the protrusion of the second disk facing surface extends into the relief well; and wherein the first point is located axially distal from the third point, and the second point is located axially distal to the third point, the first disk contacting surface extending proximally away at an angle from an opening within the first lumen along the longitudinal axis, the second disk contacting surface is located radially outward from and at a different angle relative to the first disk contacting surface. 2. The valve of claim 1 , wherein the first disk-contacting surface facing at least in part in the axial direction relative to said first lumen and the second disk-contacting surface facing at least in part in the axial direction relative to said first lumen. 3. The valve of claim 2 , wherein at least a portion of the second surface of the flexible disk is concave. 4. The valve of claim 1 , wherein the relief well provides a space for at least a portion of the second surface of the flexible disk to move or vibrate. 5. The valve of claim 1 , wherein the first point is located axially distal from the second point. 6. The valve of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of the first surface of the flexible disk is convex. 7. The valve of claim 1 , wherein the first housing further comprises a first inner wall immediately surrounding at least a portion of the first lumen and the second housing further comprises a second inner wall immediately surrounding at least a portion the second lumen. 8. The valve of claim 7 , wherein the first wall of the first housing and a portion of the protrusion of the second housing are substantially aligned along on the same longitudinal axis. 9. The valve of claim 7 , wherein the second wall of the second housing slopes away from the protrusion of the second housing. 10. The valve of claim 9 , wherein the first disk contacting surface contacts the first surface of the flexible disk at a point proximal to where the second disk contacting surface contacts the first surface of the flexible disk. 11. The valve of claim 1 , wherein the first disk contacting surface extending proximally away from the opening within the first lumen. 12. The valve of claim 1 , wherein the second contacting surface is substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis. 13. The valve of claim 1 , wherein the first disk contacting surface is substantially conical. 14. The valve of claim 1 , wherein the first disk contacting surface extending proximally away at an angle is not perpendicular to the longitudinal axis. 15. A valve comprising: a first housing, the first housing including an inner wall and a first disk facing surface, the inner wall of the first housing defining a first lumen extending though the first housing, the first disk facing surface including an inner portion facing at least in part in an axial direction with respect to the first lumen and an outer portion facing at least in part in an axial direction with respect to the first lumen, the inner portion located radially away from the inner wall, the outer portion located radially outward from and in a different plane than the inner portion; a second housing, the second housing including an inner wall and a second disk facing surface, the inner wall of the second housing defining a second lumen extending through the second housing, the second disk facing surface including a protrusion and defining a relief well, the protrusion located radially outward from the inner wall of the second housing and further defining the relief well, the relief well located radially outward from the protrusion; a flexible disk including a first surface facing the first disk facing surface, a second surface facing the second disk facing surface, and a side wall extending between the first surface and the second surface, the first surface including a first contact surface and a second contact surface, at least a portion of the first contact surface contacting the inner portion of the first disk facing surface and at least a portion of the second contact surface contacting the outer portion of the first disk facing surface, a portion of the second surface of the flexible disk being pinched by the protrusion and a portion of the first disk facing surface, wherein at least a radially outer portion of the flexible disk is free to deform and enter the relief well, wherein the first disk contacting surface extending proximally away at an angle from an opening within the first lumen along the longitudinal axis, the second disk contacting surface is located radially outward from and at a different angle relative to the first disk contacting surface. 16. The valve of claim 15 , wherein the side wall of the flexible disk does not contact the second housing. 17. The valve of claim 15 , wherein the side wall of the flexible disk does not contact the first housing. 18. The valve of claim 15 . wherein the inner wall of the second housing extends radially inward with respect to the protrusion. 19.
