Abstract

A method for preparing a functionalized polymer, the method comprising the steps of polymerizing monomer to form a reactive polymer, and reacting the reactive polymer with a polycyano compound.

First claim

What is claimed is:

1. A functionalized polymer defined by at least one of the formulae:

where π is a polymer chain and R 1 is a divalent organic group.

2. The polymer of claim 1 , where π is a cis-1,4-polydiene chain having a cis-1,4-linkage content that is greater than 90%.

3. The polymer of claim 1 , where π includes a polydiene having a cis-1,4-linkage content of from about 10% to about 60%, and where π optionally includes mer units deriving from monomer copolymerizable with conjugated diene monomer.
