Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A flexible manufacturing system for an article of footwear includes a printing system for printing graphics onto the footwear. The flexible manufacturing system also includes a projection system for aligning a projected graphic with a predetermined portion of the article prior to printing the graphic to the article. The graphic can include a masked portion that corresponds to a design element on the article.

What is claimed is: 1. A method of printing onto an article, the method comprising: calibrating a see-through display device to a printing system; placing an article on a platform so that the article is positioned between the platform and the display device; displaying a graphic on the display device; aligning the graphic so that the graphic corresponds to a desired location on the article; and printing the graphic onto the article in the desired location, wherein the step of aligning the graphic includes displaying the graphic on the see-through display device so that the graphic is superimposed on the article. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of aligning the graphic includes moving the article on the platform. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of aligning the graphic includes translating the graphic on the display device. 4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the display device is removably mounted to the platform, and further comprising the step of removing the display device prior to the step of printing the graphic onto the article. 5. The method of claim 4 further comprising the step of moving the printing system from a first position to a second position after the step of removing the display device, wherein when the printing system is in the second position, the article is positioned between the platform and a printer. 6. The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of manufacturing the article prior to the step of placing the article on the platform. 7. The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of receiving information related to the graphic at the display device. 8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the information related to the graphic is manipulated at a remote station, wherein the remote station includes a computing device and a second display. 9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the display device is a touch screen, and wherein the step of aligning the graphic includes sliding the graphic on the display device. 10. A flexible manufacturing system for an article, the flexible manufacturing system comprising: a platform; a printing system including a printer mounted on the platform, wherein the printer is mounted on the platform so that the printer can move from a first configuration relative to the article to a second configuration relative to the article; a display device that is calibrated with the printing system, wherein the display device is transparent; wherein the article is disposed between the display device and the platform when the printing system is in the first configuration so that the article is visible through the display device and the graphic displayed by the display device is superimposed onto the article, wherein the display device is mounted to the platform using at least one mounting post. 11. The flexible manufacturing system of claim 10 , wherein the display device is a touch screen. 12. The flexible manufacturing system of claim 10 , wherein the display device is mounted to the platform at a predetermined height above the platform. 13. The flexible manufacturing system of claim 10 , wherein the display device rests on the mounting post so that the display device is restricted from horizontal movement. 14. The flexible manufacturing system of claim 10 further comprising a remote device networked to the display device. 15. The flexible manufacturing system of claim 14 , wherein the remote device includes a computing device and a second display. 16. A method of printing onto to an article, the method comprising: calibrating a see through display device to a printing system; placing an article on a platform so that the article is positioned between the platform and the see through display device; displaying an image of a functional element on the see through display device; aligning the image of the functional element so that the image of the functional element on the see through display device is superimposed onto the article at a predetermined location; and printing the functional element onto the article at the predetermined location using the printing system. 17. The method of claim 16 , wherein the step of printing the functional element onto the article includes printing multiple layers of ink onto the article. 18. The method of claim 16 , wherein the step of aligning the image of the functional element includes translating the image on the see through display device. 19. The method of claim 16 further comprising the steps of: removing the see through display device prior to the step of printing the functional element onto the article; and moving the printing system from a first position to a second position after the step of removing the display device, wherein when the printing system is in the second position, the article is positioned between the platform and a printer.
