A sensing mechanism ( 12 ) for detecting user contact with an active portion ( 26 ) of the power tool ( 10 ) is provided. In addition, a safety mechanism ( 14 ) for preventing prolonged user contact with the active portion ( 26 ) of a power tool ( 10 ) is provided. The safety mechanism ( 14 ) is configured to actuate upon receipt of a signal from the sensing mechanism ( 12 ). According to a first aspect, the safety mechanism ( 14 ) is arranged to rapidly displace the active portion ( 26 ) away from a user extremity. Alternatively, according to a second aspect, the safety mechanism ( 14 ) is arranged to rapidly urge an extremity of the user away from the active portion ( 26 ) of the power tool ( 10 ).

What is claimed is: 1. A power tool, comprising: a frame structure; a blade mounted on a spindle that is supported by the frame structure; a drive motor mounted to the frame structure and configured to drive the spindle; a strap disposed proximate to the blade and coupled at a first end to a frame structure; a biasing member engaged with the strap and operates to urge the strap into engagement with the blade; a deployment mechanism selectively coupled between the strap and the frame structure and, in response to an activation signal, operates to uncouple from the strap, the strap being disengaged from the blade when the deployment mechanism is coupled to the strap and the strap is biased by the biasing member into engagement with the blade when the deployment member is uncoupled from the pawl; a transmitter capacitively coupled to the blade and operable to transmit an electrical signal to the blade; a receiver capacitively coupled to the blade and operable to receive the electrical signal transmitted to the blade; a controller connected to the receiver and the deployment mechanism, the controller operable to detect a variation in the electrical signal and send an activation signal to the deployment mechanism when the variation in the electrical signal exceeds the threshold value, where the controller adjusts the threshold value based on an electrical load associated with the operation of the blade. 2. The power tool of claim 1 wherein the strap is comprised of a para-aramid synthetic fiber. 3. The power tool of claim 1 wherein the biasing member is defined as a spring. 4. The power tool of claim 3 further includes a channel that encapsulates a substantial portion of the strap and the first end of the strap is attached to an inner surface of the channel. 5. The power tool of claim 4 further includes a friction device residing in the channel of the strap carrier and cooperates with the strap to slow deployment of the strap upon engagement of the strap with the active portion of the power tool. 6. The power tool of claim 5 wherein the deployment mechanism includes a release member that selectively couples to a release catch disposed on the second end of the strap, and an actuator that slidably moves the release member and thereby uncouples the release member from the release catch. 7. The power tool of claim 6 wherein the release member includes magnets attached thereto and the actuator includes a coil proximate to the release member and generates a counter flux opposing the magnets and thereby moves the release member to uncouple the release member from the release catch. 8. A power tool having an active portion, comprising: a support structure; a strap that selectively engages the active portion of the power tool; a strap carrier coupled to the support structure and coupled to a first end of the strap; and a deployment mechanism selectively coupled between a second end of the strap and the strap carrier and, in response to an activation signal, uncouples the strap from the strap carrier such that the strap engages the active portion of the power tool and thereby discontinues movement of the active portion of the power tool. 9. The power tool of claim 8 wherein the strap is comprised of a para-aramid synthetic fiber. 10. The power tool of claim 8 wherein the strap carrier includes a channel that houses a portion of the strap, where the first end of the strap is attached to an inner surface of the channel. 11. The power tool of claim 10 wherein the active portion is further defined as a rotating blade such that teeth of the rotating blade engage the strap and pulls the strap taut. 12. The power tool of claim 10 further includes a friction device residing in the channel of the strap carrier and cooperates with the strap to slow deployment of the strap upon engagement of the strap with the active portion of the power tool. 13. The power tool of claim 8 further comprises a biasing member integrated with the strap carrier and operates to bias the strap into engagement with the active portion when the strap is uncoupled from the strap carrier. 14. The power tool of claim 8 wherein the deployment mechanism includes a release member that selectively couples to the second end of the strap and an actuator that actuates the release member and thereby uncouples the strap from the strap carrier. 15. The power tool of claim 8 further includes a transmitter capacitively coupled to the active portion and operable to transmit an electrical signal to the active portion; a receiver capacitively coupled to the active portion and operable to receive the electrical signal transmitted to the active portion; and a controller connected to the receiver and the deployment mechanism, the controller operable to detect a variation in the electrical signal and send an activation signal to the release mechanism when the variation in the electrical signal exceeds the threshold value, where the controller adjusts the threshold value based on an electrical load associated with the operation of the active portion.
