An apparatus for cleansing wounds, in which wound exudate is removed from a wound bed and selectively cleansed and returned to the wound. The cleansing means removes materials deleterious to wound healing, and the cleansed fluid, still containing materials that are beneficial in promoting wound healing, is returned to the wound bed. The associated wound dressing and cleansing means are conformable to the wound, and may have irrigant fluid circulated from a reservoir by a device for moving fluid through a flow path which passes through the dressing and a means for fluid cleansing and back to the dressing.

What is claimed is: 1. A multi-component wound dressing for treating a wound using a reduced pressure, comprising: a wound covering element adapted to be applied to a surface of the skin to cover the wound, thereby forming a wound space, said wound covering element having at least one connector configured to connect to a pressure reducing device and through which reduced pressure can be applied to the wound; a sorption unit configured to absorb wound exudate material in the wound space; a porous member positioned above the sorption unit in a fluid pathway between the sorption unit and the pressure reducing the porous member configured to prevent passage of wound exudate material from the sorption unit into the at least one connector; wherein the wound dressing is configured such that absorbed wound exudate material, when sequestered by the sorption unit, remains in the wound space until the sorption unit is removed; and a wound contact layer positioned below the sorption unit. 2. The multi-component dressing of claim 1 , further comprising a pressure reducing device connected to the at least one connector. 3. The multi-component dressing of claim 2 , further comprising at least one pipe connected to the pressure reducing device. 4. The multi-component dressing of claim 3 , wherein the pipe connects to the pressure reducing device through an opening passing through the wound covering element. 5. The multi-component dressing of claim 3 , wherein the pipe connects to a boss mounted to the wound covering element at an opening in the wound covering element. 6. The multi-component dressing of claim 2 , wherein the pressure reducing device comprises a pump. 7. The multi-component dressing of claim 2 , wherein the pump is mounted to the wound covering element. 8. The multi-component dressing of claim 2 , wherein the pump is separate from the multi-component dressing. 9. The multi-component dressing of claim 2 , wherein the pump is operated by a piezoelectric transducer. 10. The multi-component dressing of claim 1 , wherein the dressing has at least one conformable hollow body that contains the sorption unit. 11. The multi-component dressing of claim 10 , wherein the conformable hollow body is defined by a membrane which has pores. 12. The multi-component dressing of claim 11 , wherein the conformable hollow body has an inflatable and deflatable balloon core. 13. The multi-component dressing of claim 10 , wherein a material of the conformable hollow body contains an active substance which has a therapeutic effect on a wound healing process. 14. The multi-component dressing of claim 10 , wherein the conformable hollow body is glued to the wound covering element, a periphery being left free at the wound covering element. 15. The multi-component dressing of claim 1 , wherein the sorption unit comprises a gel. 16. The multi-component dressing of claim 15 , wherein the gel is hydrophilic. 17. The multi-component dressing of claim 15 , wherein the gel is cross-linked. 18. The multi-component dressing of claim 15 , wherein the gel is a cellulosic gel. 19. The multi-component dressing of claim 1 , wherein the dressing comprises a microbial growth inhibitor. 20. The multi-component dressing of claim 19 , wherein the microbial growth inhibitor comprises a metal ion chelator. 21. The multi-component dressing of claim 19 , wherein the microbial growth inhibitor comprises a pH adjuster. 22. The multi-component dressing of claim 19 , wherein the microbial growth inhibitor further comprises a binder or degrader for binding or destroying endotoxins. 23. The multi-component dressing of claim 1 , wherein the wound covering element comprises a backing layer having a proximal, wound-facing face and a distal face, the dressing further comprising: a chamber defined between the backing layer and the wound contact layer; and wherein the sorption unit is contained within the chamber. 24. The multi-component dressing of claim 23 , wherein the backing layer, a polymer film and the sorption unit are integral with each other and configured to be simultaneously applied to the wound as a single unit. 25. The multi-component dressing of claim 23 , further comprising at least one port integral with the dressing and configured to make a fluidic connection to the at least one connector. 26. The multi-component dressing of claim 1 , wherein the sorption unit is attached to the wound covering element. 27. The multi-component dressing of claim 1 , wherein the wound covering element comprises an adhesive film configured to be attached to the skin surrounding the wound. 28. The multi-component dressing of claim 1 , further comprising a boss positioned above the wound covering element, the boss comprising a filter. 29. A wound dressing for treating a wound using a reduced pressure, said dressing comprising: a wound covering element adapted to be applied to a surface of the skin to cover the wound, thereby forming a sealed wound space, said wound covering element having at least one connector configured to connect to a pressure reducing device and through which reduced pressure can be applied to the wound to provide a sub-atmospheric pressure environment in the wound space, a pressure reducing device configured to connect to the at least one connector; a sorption unit which absorbs wound exudate material in the wound space; wherein the absorbed wound exudate material, sequestered by the sorption unit, remains in the wound space until the sorption unit is removed; and the sorption unit, together with the sub-atmospheric pressure environment of the wound space, promotes movement of the wound exudate material to the sorption unit; a porous member positioned above the sorption unit in a fluid pathway between the sorption unit and the pressure reducing device, the porous member configured to prevent the passage of wound exudate from the sorption unit into the at least one connector; and a wound contact layer positioned below the sorption unit.
