Multi-layer golf balls having a hard, high compression center, a relatively soft intermediate layer, and a stiff outer cover layer, are provided. The outer surface hardness of the intermediate layer is less than that of both the center and the outer cover layer.
Opening claim text (preview).
What is claimed is: 1. A golf ball consisting essentially of: a center having a diameter of from 1.000 inches to 1.400 inches, a compression of from 40 to 55, and formed from a polybutadiene composition; an intermediate layer having an outer surface hardness of less than 50 Shore D and formed from a polybutadiene composition having a solid, single core compression less than the compression of the center; and a cover layer formed from a composition comprising a blend of a first ionomer, a second ionomer, and a non-ionic thermoplastic resin; wherein the outer surface hardness of the intermediate layer is less than that of both the center and the cover layer; and wherein the compression of a golf ball subassembly consisting of the center and the intermediate layer has a compression of 50 or less. 2. The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the compression of the golf ball subassembly is at least 10 compression points less than the compression of the center. 3. The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the diameter of the golf ball subassembly is 1.500 inches or greater. 4. The golf ball of claim 3 , wherein the diameter of the center is from 1.000 inches to 1.200 inches.
