Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A method for filtering blood including: withdrawing blood from an adult patient; performing ultrafiltration by filtering the withdrawn blood in a filter having an active filter membrane surface of no greater than 0.2 meters squared (m 2 ) to remove ultrafiltrate from the blood, wherein the filter membrane blocks the passage of blood molecules having a molecular weight of at least 60,000 Daltons, wherein an amount of the removed ultrafiltrate is an effective therapeutic amount for treating a fluid overload condition of the patient; infusing the ultrafiltrated blood into the adult patient, and pumping the ultrafiltrate from the filter a rate no greater than one liter per hour.

What is claimed is: 1. A method for filtering blood comprising: withdrawing blood from an adult patient; performing ultrafiltration by filtering the withdrawn blood in a filter having an active filter membrane surface of no greater than 0.2 meters squared (m 2 ) to remove ultrafiltrate from the blood, wherein the filter membrane blocks the passage of blood molecules having a molecular weight of at least 60,000 Daltons, wherein an amount of the removed ultrafiltrate is an effective therapeutic amount for treating a fluid overload condition of the patient; infusing the ultrafiltrated blood into the adult patient, and pumping the ultrafiltrate from the filter a rate no greater than one liter per hour. 2. The method of claim 1 wherein the filter includes a filter body defining a passage having a length of at least 20 centimeters (cm) and an interior diameter of no greater than 1.5 cm, wherein as the blood flows through the passage the blood flows across the active filter membrane surface. 3. The method of claim 1 wherein the filter includes a blood passage having a volume less than two percent of a cardiac output of the adult patient. 4. The method of claim 1 wherein the ultrafiltrate is removed at a rate determined by a mechanical filtrate pump and said method further comprising concentrating the blood by removal of the ultrafiltrate. 5. The method as in claim 1 wherein the filter membrane blocks passage of blood molecules having a molecular weight of at least 50,000 Daltons. 6. The method as in claim 1 wherein the filter membrane blocks passage of blood molecules having a molecular weight of at least 30,000 Daltons. 7. The method as in claim 1 wherein the filter membrane blocks passage of blood molecules having a molecular weight of at least 20,000 Daltons. 8. The method for filtering blood comprising: withdrawing blood from an adult mammalian patient; performing ultrafiltration by filtering the withdrawn blood in a filter to remove ultrafiltrate from the blood, wherein the filter includes an active filter membrane with a surface area of no greater than 0.2 meters squared (m 2 ), the active filter membrane inhibits the passage of plasma proteins from the blood, and an amount of the removed ultrafiltrate is an effective therapeutic amount for treating a fluid overload condition of the patient; infusing the ultrafiltrated blood into the adult mammalian patient, and discharging the ultrafiltrate from the filter a rate no greater than one liter per hour. 9. The method of claim 8 wherein the filter includes a filter body defining a passage having a length of at least 20 centimeters (cm) and an interior diameter of no greater than 1.5 cm, wherein as the blood flows through the passage the blood flows across the active filter membrane surface. 10. The method of claim 8 wherein the filter includes a blood passage having a volume less than two percent of a cardiac output of the adult patient. 11. The method as in claim 8 wherein the ultrafiltrate is removed at a rate determined by a mechanical filtrate pump and said method further comprising concentrating the blood by removal of the ultrafiltrate. 12. The method as in claim 8 wherein the filter membrane blocks passage of blood molecules having a molecular weight of at least 60,000 Daltons. 13. The method as in claim 8 wherein the filter membrane blocks passage of blood molecules having a molecular weight of at least 30,000 Daltons. 14. The method as in claim 8 wherein the filter membrane blocks passage of blood molecules having a molecular weight of at least 20,000 Daltons. 15. A method for filtering blood comprising: withdrawing blood from an adult patient; removing ultrafiltrate from the withdrawn blood by passing the blood across a surface of an active filter membrane having a surface area no greater than 0.2 meters squared (m 2 ) and the active filter membrane blocks the passage of blood molecules having a molecular weight of at least 60,000 Daltons, wherein an amount of the removed ultrafiltrate is an effective therapeutic amount for treating a fluid overload condition of the patient; infusing the ultrafiltrated blood into the adult patient, and discharging the ultrafiltrate with the filtrate pump at a rate no greater than one liter of ultrafiltrate per hour. 16. The method of claim 15 wherein the filter includes a filter body defining a passage having a length of at least 20 centimeters (cm) and an interior diameter of no greater than 1.5 cm, wherein as the blood flows through the passage the blood flows across the active filter membrane surface. 17. The method of claim 15 wherein the filter includes a blood passage having a volume less than two percent of a cardiac output of the adult patient. 18. The method of claim 15 wherein the ultrafiltrate is removed at a rate determined by a mechanical filtrate pump and said method further comprising concentrating the blood by removal of the ultrafiltrate. 19. The method of claim 15 wherein the steps of withdrawing, removing, infusing and discharging are performed simultaneously. 20. The method of claim 15 wherein the steps of withdrawing, removing, infusing and discharging are performed continuously.
