Embodiments of prosthetic valves for implantation within a native mitral valve are provided. One embodiment of a prosthetic valve includes a radially compressible main body and a one-way valve member. In some cases, the prosthetic valves also include ventricular anchors and/or an atrial portion coupled to and disposed outside of the main body. Methods, devices, and systems for delivering such prosthetic valves to the native mitral valve and implanting them therein are also provided.

First claim

We claim: 1. An implantable prosthetic valve comprising: a radially collapsible and radially expandable annular frame comprising: an annular main body defining a lumen therethrough; at least one ventricular anchor coupled to a ventricular end portion of the main body; and an atrial portion coupled to an atrial end of the main body and extending radially away from the main body, wherein the atrial portion comprises a plurality of radially extending atrial arms, wherein at least one of the atrial arms comprises a serpentine or coiled segment having increased flexibility relative to an adjacent arm, and the serpentine or coiled segment comprises a plurality of segments connected end-to-end along the length of the at least one arm, each segment having two 180-degree turns that are longitudinally offset relative to each other; and a valve member supported within an interior of the frame, wherein blood can flow through the valve member from the atrial end to the ventricular end of the main body when the prosthetic valve is implanted in a native mitral valve of a heart. 2. The implantable prosthetic valve of claim 1 , wherein the at least one of the arms comprises a serpentine segment comprising a plurality of substantially straight, parallel segments. 3. The implantable prosthetic valve of claim 1 , wherein the at least one of the arms comprises a serpentine segment comprising a plurality of substantially curved portions. 4. The implantable prosthetic valve of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of arms are connected to the main body independently of each other without metal segments interconnecting adjacent arms and independently from the ventricular anchor. 5. The implantable prosthetic valve of claim 1 , wherein each arm has a free end portion comprising a curved or rounded element. 6. The prosthetic valve of claim 5 , wherein the curved or rounded element comprises a horseshoe shaped element comprising two terminal end portions pointing radially inward toward the main body. 7. The prosthetic valve of claim 6 , wherein each of the two terminal end portions comprise a loop having a hole formed therethrough. 8. The prosthetic valve of claim 1 , wherein each arm comprises a single metal wire or coil that is flexible relative to the main body and to adjacent arms. 9. The prosthetic valve of claim 1 , wherein the at least one of the arms comprises a serpentine or coiled segment, and at least one other arm is substantially straight. 10. The prosthetic valve of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the arms comprises a terminal end portion which extends atrially away from the main body. 11. An implantable prosthetic valve comprising: a radially collapsible and radially expandable annular frame comprising: an annular main body defining a lumen therethrough; at least one ventricular anchor coupled to a ventricular end portion of the main body; and an atrial portion coupled to the main body and extending radially away from the main body, wherein the atrial portion comprises a plurality of radially extending arms, wherein at least one of the arms comprises a serpentine or coiled wherein at least one of the atrial arms comprises a serpentine or coiled segment having increased flexibility relative to an adjacent arm, and the serpentine or coiled segment comprises a plurality of segments connected end-to-end along the length of the at least one arm, each segment having two 180-degree turns that are longitudinally offset relative to each other, wherein each arm has a free end portion comprising a curved or rounded element comprising a horseshoe shaped element comprising two terminal end portions pointing radially inward toward the main body; and a valve member supported within an interior of the frame. 12. The prosthetic valve of claim 11 , wherein each of the two terminal end portions comprise a loop having a hole formed therethrough. 13. The prosthetic valve of claim 1 , wherein each of the arms comprises a joint portion which is coupled to an atrial end of the main body, and wherein the joint portion of the at least one of the arms has increased flexibility relative to the joint portion of the adjacent arm. 14. The prosthetic valve of claim 1 , wherein the serpentine or coiled segment of the at least one atrial arm extends from a first location to a second location along the length of the at least one atrial arm and has increased flexibility relative to a segment of an adjacent arm that extends from a respective first location to a respective second location along the adjacent arm, wherein the first and second locations of the serpentine or coiled segment are spaced the same radial distances from the main body as the first and second locations of the segment of the adjacent arm. 15. The prosthetic valve of claim 1 , wherein the serpentine or coiled segment extends substantially the entire length of the at least one atrial arm. 16. The prosthetic valve of claim 1 , wherein the serpentine or coiled segment is fixed to the main body at a radially inner end of the segment. 17. An implantable prosthetic valve comprising: a radially collapsible and radially expandable annular frame comprising: an annular main body defining a lumen therethrough; at least one ventricular anchor coupled to a ventricular end portion of the main body; and an atrial portion coupled to the main body and extending radially away from the main body, wherein the atrial portion comprises a plurality of radially extending atrial arms, wherein at least one of the atrial arms comprises a serpentine or coiled segment having increased flexibility relative to an adjacent arm, and wherein each of the arms comprises a joint portion which is coupled to an atrial end of the main body, and wherein the joint portion of the at least one of the arms has increased flexibility relative to the joint portion of the adjacent arm; and a valve member supported within an interior of the frame, wherein the at least one atrial arm having increased flexibility is configured to be positioned adjacent to the aortic sinus within a left atrium of a patient's heart. 18. An implantable prosthetic valve comprising: a radially collapsible and radially expandable annular frame comprising: an annular main body defining a lumen therethrough; at least one ventricular anchor coupled to a ventricular end portion of the main body; and an atrial portion coupled to the main body and extending radially away from the main body, wherein the atrial portion comprises a plurality of radially extending atrial arms, wherein at least one of the atrial arms comprises a serpentine or coiled segment having increased flexibility relative to an adjacent arm, and wherein the serpentine or coiled segment of the at least one atrial arm extends from a first location to a second location along the length of the at least one atrial arm and has increased flexibility relative to a segment of an adjacent arm that extends from a respective first location to a respective second location along the adjacent arm, wherein the first and second locations of the serpentine or coiled segment are spaced the same radial distances from the main body as the first and second locations of the segment of the adjacent arm; and a valve member supported within an interior of the frame, wherein the atrial arms extend radially outwardly farther from the main body than the ventricular anchor.
