A composition of matter includes an organic molecule having a composition different than stilbene. The organic molecule is embodied as a crystal, and exhibits: an optical response signature for neutrons; an optical response signature for gamma rays, and performance comparable to or superior to stilbene in terms of distinguishing neutrons from gamma rays. The optical response signature for neutrons is different than the optical response signature for gamma rays.

What is claimed is: 1. A composition of matter, comprising: an organic molecule having a composition different than stilbene, wherein the organic molecule is embodied as a single crystal, and wherein the organic molecule exhibits: an optical response signature for neutrons; an optical response signature for gamma rays, and performance comparable to or superior to stilbene in terms of distinguishing neutrons from gamma rays, wherein the optical response signature for neutrons is different than the optical response signature for gamma rays wherein the crystal exhibits physical characteristics of formation from solution, the physical characteristics including faceted growth on at least one face of the crystal. 2. The composition of matter as recited in claim 1 , wherein the single crystal has a length of greater than 25 mm in one dimension, wherein the physical characteristics include faceted growth on at least two faces of the crystal, wherein the organic molecule is characterized by continuous conjugation, wherein the composition of matter comprises more than about 98 mol % of the organic molecule, wherein the organic molecule is selected from a group consisting of: 2-fluorobiphenyl-4-carboxylic acid; 4-biphenylcarboxylic acid; 9-phenylanthracene; 1-3-5-triphenylbenzene; diphenylacetylene; 4-benzylbiphenyl; biphenyl; 4-methoxybiphenyl; n-phenylanthranilic acid; and 1-4-diphenyl-1-3-butadiene. 3. The composition of matter as recited in claim 1 , the physical characteristics including faceted growth on at least two faces of the crystal. 4. The composition of matter as recited in claim 1 , wherein the crystal has a length of greater than 1 mm in one dimension. 5. A composition of matter, comprising: an organic molecule having a composition different than stilbene, wherein the organic molecule is embodied as a single crystal, and wherein the organic molecule exhibits: an optical response signature for neutrons; an optical response signature for gamma rays, and performance comparable to or superior to stilbene in terms of distinguishing neutrons from gamma rays, wherein the optical response signature for neutrons is different than the optical response signature for gamma rays; and wherein the organic molecule is selected from a group consisting of: 2-fluorobiphenyl-4-carboxylic acid; 4-biphenylcarboxylic acid; 9-phenylanthracene; 1-3-5-triphenylbenzene; diphenylacetylene; 4-benzylbiphenyl; biphenyl; 4-methoxybiphenyl; n-phenylanthranilic acid; and 1-4-diphenyl-1-3-butadiene.
