Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A method is provided for learning driver preferences relative to the use of a vehicle's camera system, where the system automatically activates a specific camera based on these driver preferences, and where the driver preferences include both identification of the specific camera and the geographic locations associated with activating and then deactivating that camera.

What is claimed is: 1. A method of activating a camera system mounted to a vehicle, the method comprising the steps of: learning a user camera preference, said learning step comprising: monitoring use of the camera system with a vehicle system controller; detecting a user activation of a specific camera display of said camera system, wherein said user activation detecting step is performed by said vehicle system controller, and wherein said user activation corresponds to direct activation of said specific camera display; and identifying a specific geographic location corresponding to the vehicle, wherein said specific geographic location corresponds to a current vehicle location when said user activation of said specific camera display is detected, wherein said identifying step is performed automatically by said vehicle system controller; monitoring said current vehicle location, wherein said current vehicle location monitoring step is performed continuously by said vehicle system controller; and automatically activating said specific camera display whenever said current vehicle location corresponds to said specific geographic location indicating said user camera preference, wherein said step of automatically activating said specific camera is performed by said vehicle system controller. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein said camera system is comprised of a plurality of cameras, and wherein said specific camera display corresponds to one of said plurality of cameras. 3. The method of claim 2 , wherein said plurality of cameras is comprised of at least two cameras selected from the group of cameras consisting of a forward view camera, a driver side camera, a passenger side camera, a rearward view camera, and an in-cabin camera. 4. The method of claim 1 , wherein said steps of identifying said specific geographic location and monitoring said current vehicle location are performed by said vehicle system controller using an on-board geographic positioning system (GPS). 5. The method of claim 1 , said user activation of said specific camera display further comprising the steps of: recognizing a voice camera activation command, wherein said recognizing step is performed by said vehicle system controller using an in-cabin audio sensor and a voice recognition system, wherein said voice camera activation command identifies said specific camera display; and activating said specific camera display in response to said voice camera activation command. 6. The method of claim 1 , said user activation of said specific camera display further comprising the steps of: toggling a camera activation switch corresponding to said specific camera display, wherein said toggling step is performed by a user; and activating said specific camera display in response to said step of toggling said camera activation switch. 7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the step of storing said specific geographic location corresponding to said user activation of said specific camera display in a memory accessible by said vehicle system controller. 8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the steps of: detecting a user deactivation of said specific camera display, wherein said user deactivation detecting step is performed by said vehicle system controller; identifying a second specific geographic location corresponding to the vehicle, wherein said second specific geographic location corresponds to said current vehicle location when said user deactivation of said specific camera display is detected, wherein said identifying step is performed automatically by said vehicle system controller; and automatically deactivating said specific camera display whenever said current vehicle location corresponds to said second specific geographic location, wherein said step of automatically deactivating said specific camera is performed by said vehicle system controller. 9. The method of claim 8 , wherein said step of identifying said second specific geographic location is performed by said vehicle system controller using an on-board GPS. 10. The method of claim 8 , said user deactivation of said specific camera display further comprising the steps of: recognizing a voice camera deactivation command, wherein said voice camera deactivation command identifies said specific camera display; and deactivating said specific camera display in response to said voice camera deactivation command. 11. The method of claim 8 , said user deactivation of said specific camera display further comprising the steps of: toggling a camera deactivation switch corresponding to said specific camera display, wherein said toggling step is performed by said user; and deactivating said specific camera display in response to said step of toggling said camera deactivation switch. 12. The method of claim 8 , further comprising the step of storing said second specific geographic location corresponding to said user deactivation of said specific camera display in a memory accessible by said vehicle system controller.
