A method and apparatus are provided for regulating transmissions according to a tournament method, implemented by a station having at least one data packet to be transmitted via a wireless communication network having a predetermined bandwidth. The method includes a step during which the station determines whether or not to participate in a tournament, the likelihood of a station participating in a tournament depending on the predetermined bandwidth. Specifically, the likelihood of a station participating in a tournament is selected to be higher as the predetermined bandwidth gets higher.

The invention claimed is: 1. A regulation method comprising: regulating a transmission using a tournament mechanism by a station having at least one data packet to transmit at a determined rate, via a wireless communications network, wherein regulating comprises: determining whether or not the station is participating in a tournament based on a probability with which the station participates in a tournament, wherein the probability is a function of said determined data rate, said determined data rate being independent of transmission authorizations or prohibitions allocated to the station during any preceding tournament; and transmitting the at least one data packet by the station on the wireless communications network at the determined rate, upon determination that the station participates in the tournament and is authorized to transmit the at least one data packet. 2. A method according to claim 1 , wherein the probability with which the station participates in a tournament increases with an increase in said determined data rate. 3. A method according to claim 1 , wherein the probability is also a function of another parameter that is characteristic of said packet to transmit. 4. A method according to claim 1 , wherein the probability with which the station participates in a tournament is equal to 1 when said determined rate is greater than a mean data rate value Q moy estimated for all stations that emitted a packet during preceding tournaments. 5. A method according to claim 1 , wherein: at the beginning of a tournament, the station obtains an index value A from which the station determines probability values that are allocated thereto for various rounds of the tournament; and the station participates in a tournament if the index value A it has obtained lies in the interval [1−1/Q moy ; 1[ where Q moy is a mean data rate value estimated for all stations that emitted a packet during preceding tournaments. 6. A method according to claim 5 , wherein when the station participates in a tournament, the station weights the index value (A) by the ratio (Q moy ) in the following manner: A′= 1− Q moy (1− A ) where the weighted index value A′ is used instead of the value A in order to determine probability values that are allocated to the station. 7. A method according to claim 5 , wherein the index value used for a tournament is calculated as a function of an index value used for a preceding tournament. 8. A method according to claim 7 , wherein the index value used for the next tournament is equal to: A=A +( A n i −1)/ Q moy −1/ Q cour if the station won the preceding tournament, or else A=A +( A n i −1)/ Q moy where: [A n i , A n i+1 [ is the interval corresponding to the sequence of values r(1) . . . r(k) allocated to the station winning the preceding tournament; Q cour is the data rate value with which the station is to transmit a packet during the next tournament; and Q moy is a mean data rate value estimated for all stations that have emitted a packet during preceding tournaments. 9. A method according to claim 5 , wherein the index value used for a tournament is drawn at random in the interval of values [1−1/Q cour ; 1[, where Q cour is a normalized value of said determined data rate. 10. A data processor readable, non-transmissible recording medium having a program recorded thereon that includes program code instructions configured to execute a regulation method when the instructions are executed by a processor, the method comprising: regulating a transmission using a tournament mechanism by a station having at least one data packet to transmit at a determined data rate, via a wireless communications network, wherein regulating comprises: determining whether or not the station is participating in a tournament-based on a probability with which the station participates in a tournament, wherein the probability is a function of said determined data rate, said determined data rate being independent of transmission authorizations or prohibitions allocated to the station during any preceding tournament; and transmitting the at least one data packet by the station on the wireless communications network at the determined rate, upon determination that the station participates in the tournament and is authorized to transmit the at least one data packet. 11. A station comprising: a network access device configured to transmit at least one data packet at a determined data rate, via a wireless communications network, and a transmission management module configured to regulate a transmission by the network access device using a tournament mechanism, the transmission management module being configured to determine whether or not the station participates in a tournament, based on a probability with which the station participates in a tournament, the probability being a function of said determined data rate, said determined data rate being independent of transmission authorizations or prohibitions allocated to the station during any preceding tournament. 12. A station according to claim 11 , wherein the probability with which the station participates in a tournament increases with an increase in said determined data rate. 13. A station to claim 11 , wherein the probability is also a function of another parameter that is characteristic of said packet to transmit. 14. A station according to claim 11 , wherein the probability with which the station participates in a tournament is equal to 1 when said determined rate is greater than a mean data rate value Q moy estimated for all stations that emitted a packet during preceding tournaments. 15. A station according to claim 11 , wherein the station comprises means for: at the beginning of a tournament, obtaining an index value A from which the station determines probability values that are allocated thereto for various rounds of the tournament; and participating in a tournament if the index value A it has obtained lies in the interval [1−1/Q moy ; 1[ where Q moy is a mean data rate value estimated for all stations that emitted a packet during preceding tournaments. 16. A station according to claim 15 , wherein the station comprises means for weighting, when the station participates in a tournament, weights the index value (A) by the ratio (Q moy ) in the following manner: A′= 1− Q moy (1− A ) where the weighted index value A′ is used instead of the value A in order to determine probability values that are allocated to the station. 17. A station according to claim 15 , wherein the index value used for a tournament is calculated as a function of an index value used for a preceding tournament. 18. A station according to claim 17 , wherein the index value used for the next tournament is equal to: A=A +( A n i −1)/ Q moy −1/ Q cour if the station won the preceding tournament, or else A=A +( A n i −1)/ Q moy where: A n i , A n i+1 [ is the interval corresponding to the sequence of values r(1) . . . r(k) allocated to the station winning the preceding tournament; Q cour is the data rate value with which the station is to transmit a packet during the next tournament; and Q moy is a mean data rate value estimated for all stations that have emitted a packet during preceding tournaments. 19. A station according to claim 15 , wherein the index value used for a tournament is drawn at random in the interval of values [1−1/Q cour ; 1[, where Q cour is a norma
