The disclosed concerns a method of transporting a tower of a wind turbine in an upright position to an assembly site of the wind turbine, whereby the tower is equipped with a strake set comprising a number of strakes positioned to lead from a top of the tower in the upright position down towards a bottom of the tower, at least one of the strakes being realized as a detachable strake. The invention also concerns a strake set and transport assembly.

The invention claimed is: 1. A method of transporting a tower of a wind turbine in an upright position to an assembly site of the wind turbine comprising: equipping the tower with a strake set comprising a number of strakes positioned to lead from a top of the tower in the upright position down towards a bottom of the tower, at least one of the strakes being an independently adjustable strake, and at least one of the strakes being independently detachable and having a helicity which is adjustable when the strake is attached to the tower of a wind turbine at at least one point; and transporting the tower in the upright position. 2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the number of strakes is at least two. 3. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the strakes are aligned along the circumference of the tower at essentially equal angles. 4. A transport assembly for transporting a tower of a wind turbine in an upright position to an assembly site of the wind turbine, comprising: a mechanical raising device configured to be connected to the top end of the tower when the tower is in an upright position such that the mechanical raising device is positioned substantially over a top cross section of the tower; and a strake set attached to the external surface of the tower and running helically down the tower, the strake set comprising a number of strakes, wherein at least one of the strakes is an independently adjustable strake, and at least one of the strakes is an independently detachable strake having a helicity which is adjustable when the strake is attached to the tower of a wind turbine at at least one point.
