Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A system and method for allowing access to digitally protected content are disclosed. License metadata and credentials from multiple types of digital rights management systems may be used to grant access to content protected by a different type of digital rights management system. Hierarchical levels of access to the content may be granted based on at least one of license metadata and credentials.

What is claimed is: 1. A method comprising: receiving, using a processor, license metadata from an entity for accessing a digital content protected by a first digital rights management system, wherein the license metadata is associated with a second digital rights management system; receiving, using the processor, one or more credentials from the entity; verifying, using the processor, the one or more credentials and the license metadata associated with the second digital rights management system; deriving access data for accessing the digital content protected by the first digital rights management system using the license metadata associated with the second digital rights management system; enabling a first level of access to the digital content using the access data if the one or more credentials are identity-based, enabling a second level of access to the digital content using the access data if the one or more credentials are device-based, and enabling a third level of access to the digital content using the access data if the one or more credentials are domain-based, wherein the first level of access provides more rights to the digital content than the second level of access, and the second level of access provides more rights to the digital content than the third level of access; and wherein the first digital rights management system is of a first type selected from an identity-based DRM system, a device-based DRM system and a domain-based DRM system, wherein the second digital rights management system is of a second type, and wherein the first type is different than the second type. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein receiving the license metadata, receiving the one or more credentials, verifying the one or more credentials and the license metadata, and deriving access data are performed by an authorization module. 3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the authorization module is configured to communicate securely with the first digital rights management system. 4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the enabling access is performed by an authorization module. 5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the enabling access is performed by the first digital rights management system. 6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second type is selected from the identity-based DRM system, the device-based DRM system and the domain-based DRM system. 7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the rights include: viewing the digital content; copying the digital content; editing the digital content; and recording the digital content. 8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first level of access includes rights to view, copy and record the digital content, the second level of access includes rights to view and copy the digital content, and the third level of access includes rights to view the digital content. 9. A system comprising: a processor configured to: receive license metadata from an entity for accessing a digital content protected by a first digital rights management system, wherein the license metadata is associated with a second digital rights management system; receive one or more credentials from the entity; verify the one or more credentials and the license metadata associated with the second digital rights management system; derive access data for accessing the digital content protected by the first digital rights management system using the license metadata associated with the second digital rights management system; and enable a first level of access to the digital content using the access data if the one or more credentials are identity-based, enabling a second level of access to the digital content using the access data if the one or more credentials are device-based, and enabling a third level of access to the digital content using the access data if the one or more credentials are domain-based, wherein the first level of access provides more rights to the digital content than the second level of access, and the second level of access provides more rights to the digital content than the third level of access; and wherein the first digital rights management system is of a first type selected from an identity-based DRM system, a device-based DRM system and a domain-based DRM system, wherein the second digital rights management system is of a second type, and wherein the first type is different than the second type. 10. The system of claim 9 , wherein receiving the license metadata, receiving the one or more credentials, verifying the one or more credentials and the license metadata, and deriving access data are performed by an authorization module. 11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the authorization module is configured to communicate securely with the first digital rights management system. 12. The system of claim 9 , wherein the enabling access is performed by an authorization module. 13. The system of claim 9 , wherein the enabling access is performed by the first digital rights management system. 14. The system of claim 9 , wherein the second type is selected from the identity-based DRM system, the device-based DRM system and the domain-based DRM system. 15. The system of claim 9 , wherein the rights include: viewing the digital content; copying the digital content; editing the digital content; and recording the digital content. 16. The system of claim 9 , wherein the first level of access includes rights to view, copy and record the digital content, the second level of access includes rights to view and copy the digital content, and the third level of access includes rights to view the digital content.
