A protective case for an electronic device includes a protective shell and a flexible portion. The protective shell has an inner surface, an outer surface, and side members that define a perimeter of the protective shell. The side members at least partially cover respective sides of the electronic device when the electronic device is in the protective shell. The protective shell also has cutouts extending from the inner surface to the outer surface. The flexible portion is disposed on the inner surface of the protective shell and extends through cutouts of the protective shell to at least the outer surface of the protective shell.

What is claimed is: 1. A protective case for an electronic device, the protective case comprising: a protective shell having an inner surface, an outer surface, and a plurality of side members defining a perimeter of the protective shell, the side members at least partially covering respective sides of the electronic device when the electronic device is disposed in the protective shell, the protective shell having one or more cutouts extending from the inner surface of the protective shell to the outer surface of the protective shell; and a flexible portion disposed on at least a portion of the inner surface of the protective shell and extending through the one or more cutouts of the protective shell to at least the outer surface of the protective shell; wherein the flexible portion comprises an elastomer; wherein the flexible portion is overmolded on the protective shell using a two shot molding process; wherein the protective shell comprises a one-piece hard plastic shell; and wherein the protective case is shaped to provide air gaps between corners of the protective case and the electronic device disposed in the protective case, each corner of the protective case adapted to deflect toward the electronic device and reduce a size of the associated air gap when the corner is subjected to an external impact force. 2. The protective case of claim 1 wherein the at least one of the one or more cutouts is a corner cutout on a corner of the protective shell and the flexible portion extends through the corner cutout. 3. The protective case of claim 1 wherein the protective shell comprises a top portion, and a bottom portion that snaps together with the top portion to form the protective shell. 4. The protective case of claim 1 wherein the flexible portion includes a molded button extending through an opening in the protective shell for actuation of a user interface component of the electronic device from outside the protective case when the electronic device is disposed in the protective case. 5. The protective case of claim 1 wherein the flexible portion forms a flexible access flap for accessing a port of the electronic device when the electronic device is disposed in the protective case. 6. The protective case of claim 1 wherein the protective case snaps onto the electronic device. 7. The protective case of claim 1 wherein the flexible portion extends to an outer back surface of the protective shell. 8. A protective case for an electronic device, the protective case comprising: a protective shell that has an inner surface, an outer surface, and a plurality of side members defining a perimeter of the protective shell that covers respective sides of the electronic device when the electronic device is disposed in the protective shell, the protective shell having a plurality of holes extending through the protective shell from the inner surface of the protective shell to the outer surface of the protective shell; wherein the protective shell comprises a one-piece hard plastic shell; and a flexible material overmolded with and on to the protective shell, the flexible material extending from the inner surface of the protective shell through at least one of the holes of the protective shell, the flexible material comprising an elastomer; and wherein the protective case is shaped to provide air gaps between corners of the protective case and the electronic device disposed in the protective case, each corner of the protective case adapted to deflect toward the electronic device and reduce a size of the associated air gap when the corner is subjected to an external impact force. 9. The protective case of claim 8 wherein the at least one of the holes is on a corner of the protective shell and the flexible material extends through the corner of the protective shell to the outer surface of the protective shell. 10. The protective case of claim 8 wherein the flexible material includes a molded button extending through one of the holes in the protective shell for actuation of a control feature of the electronic device from outside the protective case when the electronic device is disposed in the protective case. 11. The protective case of claim 8 wherein the protective shell includes one or more grooves and the flexible material is molded into the one or more grooves to increase contact surface area between the flexible material and the protective shell to enhance bonding between the flexible material and the protective shell. 12. The protective case of claim 8 wherein the protective case snaps onto the electronic device. 13. The protective case of claim 8 wherein the flexible material extends to an outer back surface of the protective shell. 14. A case removably attachable to an electronic device, the case comprising: a rigid member having an inner surface, an outer surface, and a plurality of side members defining a perimeter of the case that covers one or more sides of the electronic device when the electronic device is installed in the case, the rigid member having one or more cutouts extending between the inner surface of the rigid member and the outer surface of the rigid member; and a flexible material formed on at least a portion of the inner surface of the rigid member and extending through at least one of the one or more cutouts of the rigid member to the outer surface of the rigid member; wherein the flexible material comprises an elastomer; wherein the flexible material is overmolded on the rigid member using a two shot molding process; and wherein the case is shaped to provide air gaps between corners of the case and the electronic device disposed in the case, each corner of the case adapted to deflect toward the electronic device and reduce a size of the associated air gap when the corner is subjected to an external impact force. 15. The case of claim 14 wherein the one or more cutouts includes four cutouts, each of the four cutouts at a respective corner of the rigid member, the flexible material extending through the four cutouts of the rigid member. 16. The case of claim 15 wherein the one or more cutouts further includes a cutout on a back surface of the rigid member, the flexible material extending through the cutout on the back surface of the rigid member.
