Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A humidifier for humidifying a flow of breathable gas to be delivered to a patient includes a chamber configured to receive the flow of breathable gas; a tub configured to contain a supply of water, the tub being configured to be inserted into the chamber; a lid provided on the chamber and being movable between an open position and a closed position; and a seal provided on the lid, the seal being configured to seal the chamber such that the flow of breathable gas pressurizes the chamber. The humidifier may be connectable to a flow generator configured to generate the flow of breathable gas. A tube for delivering the humidified flow may be connected to the humidifier. The tube may be a heated or non-heated tube. A respiratory apparatus for delivering a flow of breathable gas to a patient may include the humidifier and the flow generator and/or the tube. A method of humidifying a flow of breathable gas comprises sealing a chamber containing a supplying a water and pressurizing the chamber by directing the flow of breathable gas into the chamber.

What is claimed is: 1. A humidifier for humidifying a flow of breathable gas to be delivered to a patient, the humidifier comprising: a chamber comprising a chamber outlet, the chamber configured to receive the flow of breathable gas; a tub comprising a tub lid, a tub base, an inlet and an outlet, the tub configured to contain a supply of water, the tub being configured to be removably inserted into the chamber and to direct the flow of breathable gas into the inlet; and a chamber lid provided on the chamber and being movable between an open position in which an interior of the chamber is exposed to atmosphere and a closed position in which the interior of the chamber is sealed off from atmosphere such that the chamber is pressurized when the breathable gas flows, wherein when in the closed position the chamber lid is configured to engage the tub to facilitate the formation of a seal between the tub outlet and the chamber outlet. 2. A humidifier according to claim 1 , wherein the chamber lid is hinged to the chamber. 3. A humidifier according to claim 2 , wherein the chamber comprises latches that engage corresponding catches on the chamber lid to maintain the chamber lid in the closed position, the latches are biased into engagement with the catches, and the latches are provided on a chamber lid closing member that is supported on a retaining wall of the chamber. 4. A humidifier according to claim 3 , wherein: the chamber lid closing member comprises at least one tab that is received in at least one slot in the retaining wall, and the chamber lid closing member is biased so that the latches engage the catches when the chamber lid is in the closed position. 5. A humidifier according to claim 4 , wherein the chamber lid closing member comprises an opening member that is engageable by a user to move the chamber lid closing member and the latches from engagement with the catches to disengagement from the catches. 6. A humidifier according to claim 1 , wherein a chamber lid seal is provided on the chamber lid and the chamber lid seal comprises a sealing rim configured to seal a perimeter of the chamber when the chamber lid is in the closed position. 7. A humidifier according to claim 6 , wherein the chamber lid comprises a window and the chamber lid seal comprises an aperture that surrounds the window. 8. A humidifier according to claim 7 , wherein the chamber lid seal includes a second sealing rim configured to seal a perimeter of the window. 9. A humidifier according to claim 1 , wherein the chamber comprises a cradle and the cradle comprises an inlet configured to receive the flow of breathable gas. 10. A humidifier according to claim 9 , wherein the tub lid comprises a channel configured to receive the flow of breathable gas from the inlet of the cradle. 11. A humidifier according to claim 1 , wherein the chamber comprises a heating plate configured to heat the supply of water contained in the tub. 12. A humidifier according to claim 11 , further comprising an insulation layer between the heating plate and the bottom of the chamber. 13. A humidifier according to claim 1 , wherein the chamber outlet is an outlet tube. 14. A humidifier according to claim 13 , further comprising a delivery hose connected to the outlet tube. 15. A humidifier according to claim 6 , wherein the chamber lid seal comprises at least one first protrusion configured to engage the tub when the chamber lid is in the closed position. 16. A humidifier according to claim 15 , wherein the at least one first protrusion is wedge shaped. 17. A humidifier according to claim 16 , wherein the chamber lid seal comprises at least one second protrusion configured to engage a top of the tub. 18. A humidifier according to claim 17 , wherein the at least one second protrusion is dome shaped. 19. A humidifier according to claim 6 , wherein the tub comprises a water emptying aperture. 20. A humidifier according claim 19 , wherein the chamber lid seal comprises a sealing portion configured to seal the water emptying aperture when the chamber lid is in the closed position. 21. A humidifier according to claim 1 , further comprising a plate connected to the chamber configured to prevent water from flowing out of the chamber. 22. A respiratory apparatus for delivering a flow of breathable gas to a patient, comprising: a flow generator configured to generate the flow of breathable gas; and a humidifier according to claim 1 , wherein the humidifier is configured to be connected to the flow generator. 23. A humidifier according to claim 1 , wherein the chamber lid engages the tub lid to facilitate the formation of the seal between the tub outlet and the chamber outlet. 24. A humidifier according to claim 11 , wherein when the chamber lid is in the closed position the chamber lid pushes the tub against the heating plate. 25. A humidifier for humidifying a flow of breathable gas to be delivered to a patient, the humidifier comprising: a chamber configured to receive the flow of breathable gas through a chamber inlet; a chamber lid provided on the chamber and being movable between an open position and a closed position; and a tub configured to be removably received within the chamber and to contain a supply of water, the tub comprising a tub lid and a tub inlet configured to receive the breathable gas from an interior of the chamber, wherein, when the chamber lid is in the closed position, the chamber is sealed such that the flow of breathable gas pressurizes the chamber around the tub. 26. A humidifier according to claim 25 , wherein the tub lid has a channel, the channel being open to an interior of the chamber and configured to direct the flow of breathable gas from the chamber inlet to the tub inlet. 27. A humidifier according to claim 26 , wherein the chamber lid is hinged to the chamber. 28.
