Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An apparatus including a sound transducer; and a housing having the sound transducer connected thereto. The housing forms a substantially sealed air space back cavity acoustically coupled to the sound transducer. The housing includes a housing member having a first dividing structure located in the back cavity to connect two adjacent air mass sections of the back cavity, where the dividing structure includes at least one aperture to permit travel of sound waves through the at lease one aperture between the air mass sections.

What is claimed is: 1. An apparatus comprising: a sound transducer; and a structure having the sound transducer connected thereto, where the structure forms at least part of a back cavity for the sound transducer such that the back cavity forms a substantially sealed air space which is acoustically coupled to the sound transducer for the substantially sealed air space to provide a back cavity functionality for the sound transducer, where the structure comprises a first dividing structure, where the first dividing structure and at least part of a rest of the structure form, at least partially, two adjacent air mass sections, where the first dividing structure is located between the two adjacent air mass sections, where the first dividing structure comprises at least one aperture to permit travel of sound waves through the at least one aperture between the two adjacent air mass sections, where the first dividing structure comprises a first wall extending in a first direction, a second wall extending in a second different direction and an intermediate gap between the two walls, where the intermediate gap forms at least part of the at least one aperture, and where the first and second walls are substantially parallel to each other and extend in substantially opposite directions, where a first end gap is provided between an end of the first wall and a first portion of the structure, where a second end gap is provided between an end of the second wall and a second portion of the structure, and where the first end gap, the second end gap and the intermediate gap form the at least one aperture. 2. An apparatus as in claim 1 where the first dividing structure is part of a one-piece housing member having the first dividing structure integrally formed with the one-piece housing member at a first side of the one-piece housing member, where the two adjacent air mass sections are located at the first side of the one-piece housing member. 3. An apparatus as in claim 2 where the one-piece housing member comprises a second dividing structure located in the back cavity to connect two other adjacent air mass sections of the back cavity. 4. An apparatus as in claim 3 where the second dividing structure comprises a dividing wall having a plurality of apertures therethrough. 5. An apparatus as in claim 1 where the first wall, the second wall and the intermediate gap form an elongate tuned conduit area. 6. An apparatus as in claim 1 where the first wall comprises an angled elongate wall. 7. An apparatus as in claim 1 where a size of the two adjacent air mass sections relative to each other is about 50 percent or less. 8. An apparatus as in claim 1 where two air mass sections of the back cavity are located in a same plane along a first side of the structure. 9. An apparatus as in claim 1 further comprising a printed circuit board connected to a first side of a housing member of the structure to substantially seal the back cavity. 10. An apparatus as in claim 1 further comprising: a printed circuit board connected to the sound transducer; at least one processor connected to the printed circuit board; at least one memory connected to the printed circuit board; at least one electronic display connected to the printed circuit board; and at least one battery connected to the printed circuit board. 11. An apparatus as in claim 1 further comprising means for smoothing frequency response of the sound transducer, where the means for smoothing frequency response comprises the first dividing structure. 12. An apparatus as in claim 1 further comprising at least one member connected to the structure to form the back cavity, where the at least one member is connected to ends of walls of the structure along a common plane. 13. An apparatus as in claim 12 where the at least one member comprises a printed circuit board. 14. A method comprising: providing a sound transducer; connecting a member to the sound transducer, where the member comprises a wall structure establishing a perimeter of a back cavity area for the sound transducer, where the wall structure is on a single first side of the member, where the member comprises a first dividing structure located in the back cavity area connecting two adjacent air mass sections of the back cavity area, where the first dividing structure comprises a first wall extending in a first direction, a second wall extending in a second different direction and an intermediate gap between the first and second walls, where the first and second walls are substantially parallel to each other and extend in substantially opposite directions, where a first end gap is provided between an end of the first wall and a first portion of the wall structure, where a second end gap is provided between an end of the second wall and a second portion of the wall structure, and where the first end gap, the second end gap and the intermediate gap form at least one aperture between the two adjacent air mass sections; and connecting the wall structure to at least one second member to substantially close the back cavity area, where the wall structure and the first dividing structure attach to the at least one second member to form a back cavity which is substantially sealed and which is acoustically coupled to the sound transducer to provide a back cavity functionality for the sound transducer. 15. A method as in claim 14 where the first dividing structure is integrally formed with the member, and where the two adjacent air mass sections are located at a same exterior first side of the member. 16. A method as in claim 14 where the member comprises a second dividing structure located in the back cavity to connect two other adjacent air mass sections of the back cavity, where free ends of the first and second dividing structures are attached to the at least one second member. 17. A method as in claim 16 where the second dividing structure comprises a dividing wall having a plurality of apertures therethrough, where a free end of the dividing wall is attached to the at least one second member. 18. A method as in claim 14 where the first wall, the second wall and the intermediate gap form an elongate tuned conduit area, where free ends of the first and second walls are attached to the at least one second member. 19. A method as in claim 14 where the first wall comprises an angled elongate wall forming an angled joint between the two air mass sections. 20. A method as in claim 14 where a size of the two adjacent air mass sections relative to each other, after the member is attached to the at least one second member, is about 50 percent or less. 21. A method as in claim 14 where the two air mass sections of the back cavity are located in a same plane along a first side of the member. 22. A method as in claim 14 where the at least one second member comprises a printed circuit board connected to the wall structure to substantially seal the back cavity area.
