Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

The present disclosure provides a hydraulic system of a transmission having a controller and a variable displacement pump. The pump includes an inlet and outlet and is adapted to be driven by a torque-generating mechanism. The system also includes a lube circuit fluidly coupled to the pump. A lube regulator valve is disposed in the lube circuit, such that the lube regulator valve is configured to move between at least a regulated position and an unregulated position. The regulated position corresponds to a regulated pressure in the lube circuit. A pressure switch is fluidly coupled to the lube regulator valve and configured to move between a first position and a second position, where the switch is disposed in electrical communication with the controller. A solenoid is disposed in electrical communication with the controller and is controllably coupled to the pump to alter the displacement of the pump.

What is claimed is: 1. A method of controlling fluid flow in a transmission system to compensate for leakage therein, comprising: providing a controller, a variable displacement pump having an inlet and an outlet, a fluid circuit fluidly coupled to the pump, a regulator valve, a pressure switch, and a solenoid; storing a nominal regulation pressure in the controller as a function of transmission input speed; pumping fluid from the pump into the fluid circuit, where the pump is operated at a first displacement; detecting a regulation point at which the fluid in the fluid circuit reaches a regulation pressure; comparing the regulation pressure to the nominal regulation pressure and determining a difference therebetween; and adjusting the displacement of the pump from the first displacement to a second displacement to compensate for the difference between the regulation pressure and the nominal regulation pressure. 2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising fluidly actuating the regulator valve from an unregulated position to a regulated position in the fluid circuit when the regulation pressure is reached. 3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the fluidly actuating comprises: stroking a first regulator valve from a first unregulated position to a first regulated position; and stroking a second regulator valve from a second unregulated position to a second regulated position. 4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising triggering the pressure switch from a first position to a second position once the regulation pressure is reached. 5. The method of claim 4 , further comprising detecting the triggering step and sending a signal to the controller indicative of the pressure switch in the second position. 6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: determining transmission input speed at the regulation pressure; and comparing the transmission input speed at the regulation pressure to a transmission input speed corresponding to the nominal regulation pressure. 7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising detecting a fluid temperature at the regulation pressure, and comparing the detected fluid temperature to a fluid temperature corresponding to the nominal regulation pressure. 8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising storing a transmission input speed, fluid temperature, and fluid pressure corresponding to the regulation pressure in the controller. 9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the adjusting step comprises actuating the solenoid from a first electrical state to a second electrical state. 10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising determining a leakage adaptive constant for the fluid circuit as a function of at least one of fluid temperature, transmission input speed and the nominal regulation pressure. 11. The method of claim 10 , further comprising: determining a difference between the regulation pressure to the leakage adaptive constant; comparing the difference to a threshold difference stored in the controller; and triggering a diagnostic alert if the difference exceeds the threshold difference. 12. A method of adapting fluid flow in a transmission system to compensate for system leakage, comprising: providing a controller, a variable displacement pump, a first fluid circuit fluidly coupled to the pump, a second fluid circuit fluidly coupled to the pump and the first fluid circuit, a first regulator valve, a second regulator valve, a first pressure switch, a second pressure switch, and a solenoid, the method comprising: storing a first nominal regulation pressure in the controller as a function of transmission input speed, the first nominal regulation pressure corresponding to a regulation pressure of the first fluid circuit for a nominal system leakage; storing a second nominal regulation pressure in the controller as a function of transmission input speed, the second nominal regulation pressure corresponding to a regulation pressure of the second fluid circuit for a nominal system leakage; pumping fluid from the pump into the first fluid circuit, where the pump is operated at a first displacement; detecting a regulation point at which the fluid in the first fluid circuit reaches a first regulation pressure; comparing the first regulation pressure to the first nominal regulation pressure and determining a difference therebetween; and adjusting the displacement of the pump from the first displacement to a second displacement to compensate for the difference between the first regulation pressure and the first nominal regulation pressure. 13. The method of claim 12 , further comprising pumping fluid into the second fluid circuit after the regulation pressure is reached. 14. The method of claim 12 , further comprising: detecting a second regulation point at which the fluid in the second fluid circuit reaches a second regulation pressure; and comparing the second regulation pressure to the second nominal regulation pressure and determining a difference therebetween. 15. The method of claim 14 , further comprising adjusting the displacement of the pump from the first displacement to a third displacement based on the differences between the first regulation pressure and the first nominal regulation pressure and the second regulation pressure and the second nominal regulation pressure. 16. The method of claim 14 , further comprising: triggering the first pressure switch from a first position to a second position when the fluid pressure in the first fluid circuit reaches the first regulation point; and triggering the second pressure switch from a first position to a second position when the fluid pressure in the second fluid circuit reaches the second regulation point. 17. The method of claim 14 , further comprising: fluidly actuating the first regulator valve from an unregulated position to a regulated position in the first fluid circuit when the first regulation pressure is reached; and fluidly actuating the second regulator valve from an unregulated position to a regulated position in the second fluid circuit when the second regulation pressure is reached. 18. The method of claim 14 , further comprising determining a leakage adaptive constant for one of the first fluid circuit and the second fluid circuit as a function of at least one of fluid temperature, transmission input speed and the nominal regulation pressure. 19. The method of claim 18 , further comprising: determining a difference between either the first regulation pressure and the second regulation pressure to the leakage adaptive constant; comparing the difference to a threshold difference stored in the controller; and triggering a diagnostic alert if the difference exceeds the threshold difference. 20. The method of claim 18 , wherein the determining a leakage adaptive constant comprises determining a first leakage adaptive constant for the first fluid circuit and a second leakage adaptive constant for the second fluid circuit; comparing the difference between the first leakage adaptive constant and a first threshold corresponding to a leakage in the first fluid circuit; comparing the difference between the second leakage adaptive constant and a second threshold corresponding to a leakage in the second fluid circuit; and triggering a diagnostic alert if the difference between the first leakage adaptive constant exceeds the first threshold or the difference between the second leakage adaptive constant exceeds the second threshold.
