The video game system of claim 1 , wherein the light sources of the peripheral device include a red, green, or blue light emitting diode. 3. The video game system of claim 1 , wherein the translucent or diffusive material of the base of the toy object comprises a plastic. 4. The video game system of claim 1 , wherein the translucent or diffusive material of the base of the toy object has a color tint. 5. The video game system of claim 4 , wherein the color tint is blue. 6. The video game system of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the light sources is configured to produce a blue light. 7. The video game system of claim 1 , wherein the processor is configured to execute instructions which further cause the light source to emit light at a timing in response to a gameplay event. 8. The video game system of claim 1 , wherein the processor is configured to execute instructions which further cause the light source to emit light in a color at a timing based on gameplay events. 9. The video game system of claim 1 , wherein the light sources include a red light source and a blue light source. 10. The video game system of claim 1 , wherein the processor is part of a game console. 11. The video game system of claim 1 , further comprising a display device coupled to the game console, the display device for displaying aspects of game play of the video game. 12. The video game system of claim 1 , wherein the machine readable information is in the base of the toy object.
