Systems, methods and devices are disclosed for directing and focusing signals to the brain for neuromodulation and for directing and focusing signals or other energy from the brain for measurement, heat transfer and imaging. An aperture in the skull and/or a channel device implantable in the skull can be used to facilitate direction and focusing. Treatment and diagnosis of multiple neurological conditions may be facilitated with the disclosed systems, methods and devices.

The invention claimed is: 1. A transcranial interface for placement in a skull, the transcranial interface comprising: a block of material having a proximal surface and a distal surface and a plurality of lumens formed between the proximal surface and the distal surface, the block of material characterized by an overall length comprising a distance between the proximal surface and the distal surface, and the overall length approximating a thickness of the skull, wherein the block of material is further characterized by an overall width that is greater than the overall length, and at least the proximal surface is provided with a curvature along the overall width, the curvature approximating a curvature of the skull. 2. The transcranial interface of claim 1 , wherein the overall width is selected to be at least 50% greater than the selected overall length. 3. The transcranial interface of claim 1 , further comprising at least one tab extending outwardly from the proximal surface. 4. The transcranial interface of claim 3 , wherein the at least one tab has an opening adapted to receive a screw or a pin to aid in securing the interface to the skull. 5. The transcranial interface of claim 1 , further comprising a lip extending outwardly and away from the proximal surface. 6. The transcranial interface of claim 1 , wherein the block of material comprises a first material, and the proximal surface is provided with at least one tab extending outwardly from the proximal surface, wherein the at least one tab is formed from a second material that differs from the first material. 7. The transcranial interface of claim 6 , wherein the second material is substantially impermeable to ionic current. 8. The transcranial interface of claim 1 , further comprising a radio frequency identification element. 9. A transcranial interface for placement in a skull, the transcranial interface comprising: a block of material having a proximal surface and a distal surface and a plurality of lumens formed between the proximal surface and the distal surface, the block of material characterized by an overall length comprising a distance between the proximal surface and the distal surface, and the overall length approximating a thickness of the skull, wherein at least one of the plurality of lumens is at least partially filled with a substance configured to facilitate transmission of ionic current. 10. The transcranial interface of claim 9 , wherein the substance comprises one or more of the following: a porous silicone, a porous polyurethane, a saline solution, and a hydrogel. 11. The transcranial interface of claim 9 , wherein the substance comprises a porous mass constructed by sintering together particles of a nonporous polymer, wherein the nonporous polymer comprises one or more of the following: a polyurethane, a polytetrafluoroethlene, a polyetheretherketone, a polyester, and a polyamide. 12. The transcranial interface of claim 9 , wherein the substance is provided in an open-pore sponge. 13. The transcranial interface of claim 9 , wherein at least the proximal surface is provided with a curvature designed to approximate a curvature of a skull. 14. The transcranial interface of claim 9 , wherein the block of material is further characterized by an overall width, and the overall width is selected to be greater than the overall length. 15. The transcranial interface of claim 9 , further comprising at least one tab extending outwardly from the proximal surface. 16. The transcranial interface of claim 15 , wherein the at least one tab has an opening adapted to receive a screw or a pin to aid in securing the interface to the skull. 17. The transcranial interface of claim 9 , further comprising a lip extending outwardly and away from the proximal surface. 18. The transcranial interface of claim 9 , wherein the block of material comprises a first material, and the proximal surface is provided with at least one tab extending outwardly from the proximal surface, wherein the at least one tab is formed from a second material that differs from the first material. 19. The transcranial interface of claim 18 , wherein the second material is substantially impermeable to ionic current. 20. The transcranial interface of claim 9 , further comprising a radio frequency identification element.
