Abstract

A golf club with a multi-material face is disclosed herein. More specifically, the golf club head in accordance with the present invention has a striking face that forms a pocket, wherein the pocket is filled with a secondary material having a lower density to improve the performance of the golf club head. The multi-material face disclosed in accordance with the present invention may generally have a characteristic time slope of greater than about 5 and less than about 50, wherein the characteristic time slope is determined based on the various data points collected according to the United States Golf Association's (USGA's) Characteristic Time (CT) test.

First claim

What is claimed is:

1. A golf club head comprising:
a hollow shell, unitarily formed to include a metallic striking face portion having a first return extension, made out of a first material having a first density,
wherein said hollow unitary shell forms at least one opening near a crown or a sole portion of said golf club head;

at least one panel configured to cover said at least one opening, and
a face backing layer, made out of a second material having a second density, attached to an internal back surface of said striking face of said golf club head extending into at least one of said crown or said sole forming a second return extension;
wherein said golf club head has a volume of greater than about 400 cc and less than about 500 cc;
wherein said second density is lower than said first density, and
wherein a length of said first return extension is greater than a length of said second return extension.

2. The golf club head of claim 1 , wherein face backing layer is made out of a composite material.

3. The golf club head of claim 2 , wherein a length of said second return extension is greater than about 3.0 mm.

4. The golf club head of claim 3 , wherein a thickness of said face backing layer is between about 0.5 mm to about 4 mm.

5. The golf club head of claim 1 , wherein said second density is less than about 2.7 g/cm 3 .

6. The golf club head of claim 1 , wherein said second density is less than about 1.738 g/cm 3 .

7. The golf club head of claim 1 , wherein said second density is less than about 1.70 g/cm 3 .

8. A golf club head comprising:
a hollow unitary shell, including a striking face portion having a first return extension, is formed from a unitary casting and is made out of a first material having a first density
wherein said hollow unitary shell forms at least one opening near a crown or a sole portion of said golf club head;

at least one panel configured to cover said at least one opening, and
a face backing layer, made out of a second material having a second density, attached to an internal back surface of said striking face of said golf club head extending into at least one of said crown or said sole forming a second return extension;
wherein said golf club head has a volume of greater than about 400 cc and less than about 500 cc;
wherein said second density is lower than said first density, and
wherein a length of said first return extension is greater than a length of said second return extension.

9. The golf club head of claim 8 , wherein said striking face portion has a thickness of between about 0.25 mm to about 0.45 mm.

10. The golf club head of claim 9 , wherein said face backing layer has a thickness of between about 0.5 mm to about 4 mm.

11. The golf club head of claim 8 , wherein said composite face backing layer is attached to said internal backing surface of said striking face using a method comprising;
inserting a bladder into said golf club head via said at least one opening;
inflating said bladder until at least a portion of said composite face backing layer juxtaposes against said internal back surface; and
deflating said bladder to allow it to be extrapolated from said golf club head via said opening.

12. The golf club head of claim 8 , wherein said second density is less than about 1.70 g/cm 3 .

13. A golf club head comprising:
a hollow unitary shell, including a striking face portion located near a frontal portion of said golf club head having a first return extension, is formed from a unitary casting and is made out of a first material having a first density,
a face backing layer, made out of a second material having a second density, attached to an internal back surface of said striking face of said golf club head;
wherein said golf club head has a volume of greater than about 400 cc and less than about 500 cc;
wherein said second density is lower than said first density,
wherein said face backing layer forms a second return extension that extends into said crown portion and said sole portion of said golf club head, and
wherein a length of said first return extension is greater than a length of said second return extension.

14. The golf club head of claim 13 , wherein face backing layer is made out of a composite material having a density of less than about 1.7 g/cm 3 .

15. The golf club head of claim 14 , wherein a length of said second return extension is greater than about 3.0 mm.

16. The golf club head of claim 15 , wherein a thickness of said face backing layer is between about 0.5 mm to about 4 mm.

17. The golf club head of claim 16 , wherein said striking face portion has a thickness of between about 0.25 mm to about 0.45 mm.

18. The golf club head of claim 13 , wherein said face backing layer has a thickness of between about 0.5 mm to about 4 mm.
